Van Halen played a lunch time concert at our high school in 1976 so technically I could add them to that list but they just really sucked then.

As opposed to 1986?

Me and some friends led a grassroots effort to get "Dancing With Myself" elected as our prom song in 1985. It won, but the preppies running the prom committee shot it down.

We ended up with "One More Night" by Phil Collins ;P

HS for me was 1982-86.
I was playing all the great obscure New Wave back then on my own stereo (didn't have a car, though).
Think of KYYX's or KJET's playlists, and that would have been the personal HS soundtrack for me and my friends.

However, on the whole, what my actual high school listened to would have been the typical "Top 40 New Wave and Pop":

Prince
Madonna
Michael Jackson
etc.

along with what passed for suburban, preppie rock:
Def Leppard
Ratt
Quiet Riot
etc.

Pretty normal, I'd say.

Mr Glockstadt is dead on.I did not get into cassettes until 1980.I quit buying 8-tracks after the deck in my 70 camaro ate my Golden Earring live tape soon after I bought it in 1977/78.Then it was AM radio for a while.

I didn't own a car until after high school, but I had a Walkman with me at all times during that time period. Some cassette gems I owned:

Echo & The Bunnymen - self-titled EP
Human League - Fascination! EP
Simple Minds - Sparkle In The Rain, New Gold Dream, Once Upon A Time (they're my favorite band; I bought everything on both LP and cassette, and eventually on CD)
R.E.M. - Murmur
Thompson Twins - Into The Gap, Here's To Future Days
A Flock Of Seagulls - Listen
Art Of Noise - Into Battle and Who's Afraid Of The Art Of Noise?
The Church - Heyday
Kaja(googoo) - White Feathers, Extra Play and Crazy People's Right To Speak
Tears For Fears - The Hurting

I bought a lot more records than cassettes and would just make compilation tapes.

And the various artists SR-1A Sound Rations sampler that came in a tin can, where I first discovered The Smiths and Scritti Politti!

I know, my deck ate those 8-Tracks all the time before putting in a Concord cassette tape deck in my car. And to boot, right in the middle of your song, the track switched, so blank air-time and then it continued playing the song! Ugh!!! [:(] [8]

And AM radio, don't even get me started... Total dead zone for New Wave, unless you listened to KROQ's sister station at 1240 (or 1200?) AM for some good tunes (if you lived in LA, that is [;)]).

So Moparmark, may all your and mine 8-Tracks R.I.P.! [xx(] Good Riddence... [^]

In High School I made the transition from Heavy Metal to Modern Rock/New Wave, with Hardcore Punk as my transitional force.

The Soundtrack of my High School days:

The Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion, Lucretia, Dominion
The Cult - She Sell Sanctuary, Rain, Brother Wolf Sister Moon
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On, Blues from a gun
The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out
New Order - Blue Monday, True Faith
Joy Division - Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart
Skinny Puppy - Smothered Hope
Ministry - Everyday is Halloween
Lotus Eaters - First Picture of You
B-Movie - Nowhere Girl
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peekaboo, The Passenger, Happy House

and then it went further....

High school for me was 1985-1988. Had no choice but to listen to mainstream Top 40 radio but managed to discover better stuff through magazines (believe it or not Spin was a great read when it first came out) a bit from MTV and my musical saviour--the first Trouser Press Record Guide.
I found these dozen cassettes in my old bedroom last time I was at mom and dad's. Sadly, I ended up throwing them away. I don't own a cassette deck and own the important ones on CD.

Slammin Watusis
Nik Kershaw - Human Racing & The Riddle
Tubes - Completion Backwards Theory
Restless Variations compilation
Enigma Variations compilation
Homestead Records compilation
Strange Advance - 2wo
Rubber Rodeo - Scenic Views
Kate Bush - The Whole Story
World Class Punk compilation [“27 Bands 25 Countries!”]
Agent Orange - This Is The Voice
Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis
