W00t! birdmadgirl, I have a friend of mine who's a Mac user. He is the only Mac user I know who isn't evangelical about it. He loves his Mac but acknowledges that it too has its problems and that it's not for everyone. You are the U2 fan equivalent of that. Trust me, this is insanely high praise from me.

loved them from the very first time i saw them. mind you i haven't always liked every thing they have done, but overall i like probably 95%. haven't seen them live since the 80's tho. i don't go in for that big stadium rock thing. i am over it. if i can't see and be up close there is no use in me going. admire them for their longevity and no line up changes.

I have a mac, I switched from windows last year and whilst I found it hard to start with I soon got used to it.I see a computer as a tool and you pick the best tool for the job and I love my creative stuff so a mac is ideal for me. No I'm not sure what this has to do with this either...[8)]

Well, it's apropos of nothing when you factor in the original topic of discussion, but as far as my past experiences with Mac users go, you are only the second cool Mac user I've run into. Wow, Mac 2, U2 1. See, I pulled it right back 'round. ;)

If my house were burning down, I'd probably die trying to save my Mac, so I guess it's safe to say I'm a fanatic [:D] But, I'm smart enough to realize that not everyone is as enlightened as me.

I'M KIDDING!

Sort of. [:p]

The reason why some of us, hate U2 is because, while U2 progressed musically, we, on the other hand continued to cling on our to our so called 80s new wave contraptions. It is unfair to write off a band just because their sound evolved. When I was 14 and U2 decided to do Americana with Joshua Tree, It put me off but somehow at that young age I understood that artists need to grow. Looking back I understood, why they have to be ambient in the unforgettable fire, the guitar driven War was verging on testosterone posturing.

Their first foray into electronica, Acthung Baby produced "One" which coveted the number one spot for the top 50 most favorite songs of all time in a recent survey in the U.K. While dance was a byword in the Madchester era in the late 80s, U2 had a clear sensibility of bringing this new element to a wider audience, In fact my appreciation for tricky, trip-hop and drum n bass started with Achtung baby, I will always be grateful to U2 for that.

The so called U2 excesses in the Zooropa and Pop was not realy what it was. It was a parody on all the commercialism and the growing influence of mass media on people. It was theater of the absurd, it was the irony of contemporary life. The Zooropa tour have partially brought the issues of Bosnia out in the mainstream media in the 90s. The truth is, for staging such exquisite and expensive shows the band was almost bancrupt. However, their consensus to give the audience a better show prevailed. "Pop Mart" had to be bigger because 'The Zoo tour" was big. They thought they owed it to the fans that they stage bigger shows each time. While everyone thought that U2 was gonna be an Ibiza staple, they released two albums that sounded close to their roots, and suddenly the old timers raved about them again. To some extent this anti-U2 sentiment is so much like The Clash bashing from wayback. the Clash was criticized for doing funk, disco, reggae, ska and even blue grass. Now they are called genius for influencing hip-hop and this so called alternative music. The Edge guitar playing have tremendously extended the frontiers of guitar playing. As for Bono's political involvement, all I have for him is respect. For me who lives in the third world, his stand on human rights and poverty means a lot. He has had a huge impact in our lives. U2 won't be around for 25 years if they don't have anything in them worth the years.

BTW, If you have the extra time, please review my new wave inspired songs. Please put your reviews on the billboard. It's at, http://www.soundclick.com/jerbysanto thanks

Nope, campoxanto, that isn't the reason at all why I or many of the same people who hold the same opinion I do dislike U2. Though I'm not going to go further into that for birdmadgirl's sake.

Nah, it's ok. See, "knowing" you has diffused some of the energy I used to have toward disliking U2, to where I no longer feel the need to expostulate on my dislike every chance I get. You're cool, so I'll be cool, and we can all be cool together. Except when you take out your U2. I'll be in the other room listening to, um, Nik Kershaw or late-era Spandau Ballet or some other much-maligned '80s synthpopper. ;)

Its sad U2 morphed from new wave to pop rock. Just listen to their song One with Mary j. Blige. She sounds like Christina Aguilera. I think they are just going with the time. They change their style because it is "in" nowadays. They are more concerned about making money than preserving their style. Cant blame them, they matured now.

time in limited supply, under threat of extinction, that indefinable nothing, somehow motivates you, finding the right words, can be a problem,

Late last year(2005) TOWER RECORDS PHILIPPINES made available all U2 CDS on all their branches throughout the archipelago.[;)] They even placed a LOGO: U2 "THE GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD" on the portion where the albums were being displayed and sold. I, myself is a great U2 fan. But, I stop buying and collecting their albums(VINYL RECORDS/CDs) right after "RATTLE AND HUM". I didn't like their materials anymore after that. I praised BONO for being an AMBASADOR this days and considered as one of THE MOST INFLUENCIAL PERSONS in the world.[8D] I have nothing against their RECENT STUFFS because people mature and take steps for change.[8D] "THERE"S NOTHING PERMANENT IN THIS WORLD BUT CHANGE".[;)] U2 is very popular here in the PHILIPPINES and I just do hope someday they visit us here and do a concert. That would still be awesome![;)] No band lineup changes through all these years! THAT'S U2 an UNFORGETABLE FIRE![:D]

Boy, October, War and Under a Blood Red Sky are really the only U2 albums that suit my taste. I was disappointed with the Unforgettable Fire, and haven't bought a U2 album since. I respect U2 and all, but I'm just not feelin it anymore. They've done some cool songs since those days, but mostly...meh. Maybe I'm guilty of disdaining them for their mainstream success, but I don't think so. Bono's shiny-devil-guy costume (which made his butt look disproportionately large) was very much a shark-jumper, IM ever-humble O.

Vertigo really is a pretty rockin song, though.
