The Stranger.

It *could* be The Outsider. The original title is L'Etranger (sp? - I suck when it comes to non-Spanish, non-English words), which could be translated either as "the outsider" or literally as "the stranger".

More literarism, but at a very beginners' level: Josef K had its name changed to that instead of its original name (TV Eye) because the band's leader, one Paul Haig, was an existentialist and a huge fan of Franz Kafka. Josef K was the name of the hapless protagonist in Kafka's novel The Trial. When Haig was a solo artist, he duetted with The Associates' Billy Mackenzie (someone who had a happier public persona but who ended up committing suicide) on more than one occasion. One notable one was a tongue-in-cheek version of "Amazing Grace" they did for Hogamany, which is a big thing in their native Scotland. (I can't remember what holiday that's supposed to be.)

Jon King, the lead singer of Gang Of Four, had a sister named Debbie King. If you've heard all of the Songs Of The Week on this site, you have heard her voice before. She provided backup vocals for the funk group Language, and she was the lead singer in an earlier group with Language frontman Steven Hale (another Scottish native) as a band member. This group, a more post-punk one, had a single produced by Debbie's brother Jon.

Gary Numan is a famous Asperger's sufferer. Surprisingly (or not), another famous Aspie is comedian Dan Aykroyd. And the reason "We Take Mystery To Bed" sounds suspiciously like a Japan single is because it actually features the fretless bass work of one Mr. Mick Karn. (BTW, ladies, ever seen recent pictures of Karn? If not, you HAVE to check them out. The boy wasn't attractive when he was young, but BOY does he look HOT these days. SCORCHING.)

Speaking of attractive ex-members of Japan: David Sylvian and Steve Jansen are two musician brothers who, unlike the Davieses and Gallaghers, actually get on well together. This is evident in the fact that Sylvian always works with Jansen in his solo projects, including the most recent one (which is more of a collaboration with the ex-Batt brothers and avant garde musician Burnt Friedman) called Nine Horses.

More later as I think of it.

Wasn't Rain Tree Crow a side project for members of Japan?

It was more than a side project -- it was a reunion in all but name, as all the former members of Japan (with the exception of Rob "dropped out of sight" Dean) were members of Rain Tree Crow. Other projects for the ex-members of Japan that I think are especially noteworthy are David Sylvian's and Mick Karn's whole solo careers, The Dolphin Brothers (which included Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri), Jansen Barbieri Karn (self-explanatory), and Sylvian's collaborations with Robert Fripp, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and tweaker (a musician who used to be in Nine Inch Nails -- I forget his name). And now I'm motivated to listen to Porcupine Tree (which includes Barbieri) and that band that Barbieri and his wife Suzanne comprise.

A couple XTC's...

When keyboardist Barry Andrews left XTC (later to form SHRIEKBACK), THOMAS DOLBY petitioned the band to replace him, but was turned down in favor of Dave Gregory.

When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, XTC's Colin Moulding was the first choice to replace him, but he chose to stay with XTC.

Chrissie Hynde was a member of an early incarnation of The Damned. She wanted to call the band "Mike Hunt's Honourable Discharge". (Say it a couple of times...)

That's hilarious!

But, clearly, the record company would never have let them get away with using the British spelling of "honorable" in their name...

This is beggining to be a very INFORMATIVE thread. How about this, truth or just plain GOSSIP?

1. PATSY KENSIT of EIGHT WONDER married 1 of the Gallagher brothers.

2. THE CURE's first name was EASYCURE and Robert Smith said that the worst part about the band was its name.

3. SUZANNE VEGA wrote a book called "POEMS and SONGS" which she also illustrated.

4. Gabriela Kerner of NENA is the former vocalist of STRIPES.

5. The song HEADMASTER RITUAL by the SMITHS is based on actual experience of MORRISSEY when he was still in school.

Death is a beginning of a new life. If you believe in reincarnation.

Classy!

Here's a few:

The SEX PISTOLS originally considered calling themselves The Strand after the ROXY MUSIC song of the same name.

KILLING JOKE got their name from the Monty Python skit about the joke that was so funny the military used it as a weapon.

Gary Oldman's scream in Bram Stoker's Dracula was voiced by Lux Interior from the CRAMPS and overdubbed into the movie.

NEW ORDER'S official tour coctail is made from white wine and Pernod. It's called a "Headache."

The VIOLENT FEMMES were the first "alternative" band to play Carnegie Hall (1986)

DAVID BOWIE was paid $1,000,000 to play the US Festival in 1983.

Ben Orr's (THE CARS) actual last name is Orzechowski.

Oh yeah, for sure. Mr. Sakamoto was none other than the producer of said album. I haven't heard it yet but I've read the reviews, which were kinda incredulous that Mr. YMO would do something with Mr. Aztec Camera. Like a YMO/Japan collaboration would've made sense in 1978 when Japan were sounding like England's answer to the NY Dolls....

And aw, Benjamin Orr. :( R.I.P. for sure. :(

Another sadly missed musician that some might or might not classify as New Wave, but with a definite New Wave (post-punk department) connection: Robert Palmer (R.I.P.) was a huge Comsat Angels fan and was responsible for getting them signed to the major label Island Records. Palmer could make a million "Addicted To Love" clones and STILL his advocacy of the Comsat Angels would've more than made up for it. (Thankfully he didn't. When he was aiming for smoother and jazzier in the '80s, he was still that incredibly good singer/songwriter behind "Looking For Clues" and "Every Kind Of People".)

Gary Numan has the distinction of releasing the first ever mass-market VHS music video, "The Touring Principle", beating Blondie's "Eat To The Beat" by just days.
