Train the Children (or the newbie)

Postby trekds947 » Thu Sep 07, 2006 4:28 pm

Hi there.

Your mission: A newbie has just come to you--amused and quite interested in this new thing called New Wave. Your mission: what ten track mixtape do you make to train this new student in the New Wave Way.

So, what is your perfect orientation material to raise this young'n on?

Well, I'm doing this with my friends and first of all did it with myself.
Here's the training i'd provide (merely basics):
So lonely- The Police
Once in a lifetime- Talking Heads
Our house- Madness
Whip it- Devo
Atomic- Blondie
Boys don't cry- The Cure
Rescue- Echo and the bunnymen
Cities in dust- Siouxsie and the banshees
I will follow- U2
Love will tear us apart- Joy Division
This charming man- the smiths

Never let me down again- Depeche Mode
What have i done to deserve this?- Pet Shop Boys
Secret- OMD
Planet Earth- Duran Duran
It's my life- Talk Talk
Shout- tears for fears
True- Spandeau Ballet

those kind of songs were the ones that got me started into NW.

Ten tracks calculated to convert the most committed new wave skeptic:

XTC-Life Begins at the Hop
Nina Hagen-Wir Leben Immer Noch
Devo-Come Back Jonee
Human League-Seconds
Tubeway Army-Me! I Disconnect From You
Plastic Bertrand-Ca Plane Pour Moi
Ultravox-Frozen Ones
Kraftwerk-Pocket Calculator
The Only Ones-Another Girl, Another Planet
Blondie-11:59

In all humility, I have to say that I am the undisputed mix-tape KING.[:D]

Ten track mix tape? If this newbie is under 25 years old-- first of all what's this odd contraption--this small thing with this tape running through it?

Now, what you do is--you just stick all of your new wave tracks on an Ipod, and have them enjoy. [:p] In case they do not use Shuffle, then . . .

1. Video Killed the Radio Star--Buggles (they probably have heard of it with MTV and there's definitely a connection)
2. This is Radio Clash--Clash
3. Living in Oblivion--Anything Box
4. Cities in Dust--Siouxsie and the Banshees
5. Legal Tender--B-52s
6. I Ran--Flock of Seagulls
7. Atomic--Blondie
8. It's My Life--TalkTalk
9. Running Up That Hill--Kate Bush
10. See Those Eyes--Altered Images
11. Planet Earth--Duran Duran
12. Watch Me Bleed--Tears For Fears
13. Eighties--Killing Joke (let them realize what Nirvana did :) )
14. Watching the Detectives--Elvis Costello
15. Shock the Monkey--Peter Gabriel
16. Drop Your Pants--Hilary OR Janitor--Suburban Lawns
17. Turning Japanese--Vapors
18. Ring of Fire--Wall of Voodoo
19. New Toy--Lene Lovich
20. One of Our Submarines--Thomas Dolby
21. Here Comes the Rain Again--Eurythmics
22. Delicious Demon--Sugarcubes
23. How Soon is Now?--Smiths
24. The Killing Moon--Echo and the Bunnymen
25. The Model--Kraftwerk

I could probably go on with this . . . and this is on top of my head. Fortunately, that nifty Ipod will do the trick, so much that hopefully the young person would go home and start deleting their Britney/Hillary Duff collections. [:)]

Well, since we have to introduce NEW WAVE MUSIC to a NEOPHYTE. I guess we could give them the Basics. My ten-track list would be:

People are People- DEPECHE MODE
Everybody wants to rule the world- TEARS FOR FEARS
Hungry Like The Wolf- DURAN DURAN
Gold- SPANDAU BALLET
In Between Days- THE CURE
This Charming Man- THE SMITHS
The Killing Moon- ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN
Whip It- DEVO
Rock Lobster- THE B52s
Should I Stay or Should I Go- THE CLASH

I think if you're going to convert someone, you'd probably start with stuff they're at least semi-familiar with because they may have heard them before on the radio or in TV commercials.

Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
Madness - It Must Be Love
Yaz - Situation
Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
Romeo Void - Never Say Never
Aztec Camera - Oblivious
Lene Lovich - Lucky Number
Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime
Big Country - In a Big Country

Before getting into anything too obscure, quirky, synth or post-punk, I'd begin with more mainstream material as an introduction to draw someone in. Let them get their feet wet and get comfortable. Such as:

Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush)
Danger (The Motels)
How Soon Is Now (The Smiths)
The Killing Moon (EATB)
Tears Run Rings (Marc Almond)
Desperate But Not Serious (Adam Ant)
Christine (Siousxie & The Banshees)
20 Killer Hurts (Gene Loves Jezebel)
Up On The Catwalk (Simple Minds)
Noticeable One (Missing Persons)

And if that doesn't work then hit 'em with stuff like Mongoloid and Teenage Enema Nurses In Bondage! [:D]

Having converted countless people to New Wave music since I returned to the U.S. in 1987, I've had significant experience doing this. Out of all the New Wave bands, Joy Division and the Violent Femmes are the least polarizing (outside of punk) to the young or simply unenlightened. I would avoid most late '70s and early '80s New Wave, especially much of the synthesized cheese and definitely no power pop. Most of the kids I've gotten hooked onto New Wave, or at least created an appreciation for it, despised the silly mainstream New Wave records that often clogged "flashback" specialty programs on U.S. alternative radio stations. When I introduce youths to New Wave, I give them the real stuff, music of real emotional substance and timeless appeal, mainly the artists that were identified as New Wave in the Philippines. When I was working at a newspaper office a few years back, the interns would hurl whenever KNDD-FM was spinning Adam Ant, the B-52's, Oingo Boingo, Lene Lovich, etc. (I can't blame them -- much of that material is seriously dated.) However, they really got into the Chameleons, the Mission, the Railway Children, the Sound, among others. Those artists enabled them to take the genre seriously.

My introductory package, all of which I used before successfully, would include:

"Add It Up" - the Violent Femmes
"Total Recall (Live Version)" - the Sound
"Tears" - the Chameleons
"Wasteland" - the Mission
"Fascination Street" - the Cure
"Lips Like Sugar" - Echo & the Bunnymen
"There Is A Light" - the Smiths
"Transmission" - Joy Division
"Pushing Up Daisies" - the Colourfield
"Cities in Dust" - Siouxsie & the Banshees
"Monica's Light" - the Railway Children
"Reptile" - the Church
"Blasphemous Rumours" - Depeche Mode
"It Hurts" - the Lotus Eaters
"Bitterness" - the Wild Swans
"Between Something and Nothing" - the Ocean Blue
"Tomorrow I Set Sail" - the Wedding
"Just Like Honey" - the Jesus & Mary Chain
"Coming Home" - Fra Lippo Lippi

"Moving in Stereo" - Cars
"It's All I Can Do" - Cars
"Beautiful World" - Devo
"Whip It" - Devo
"State of the Nation" - Industry
