I've never heard an acoustic version of 'Uncertain Smile', VegasGirl74. Where did you hear it? That info might help us track it down.

I have a copy stashed away. I think one of the mixes was accoustic.

I guess when I read 'acoustic version' I tend to think of a stripped down acoustic guitar only sound. However, I suppose if you aren't using an electric instrument, you're using an acoustic instrument, whether it's a guitar or a piano. The only version of Uncertain Smile (I know of) which comes close to this definition is on Soul Mining.

Maybe it was the Pierce Turner version you heard?

There is an instrumental cover done in 1987 of the classic Uncertain Smile on Pierce Turner "It's only a long way across" on Beggars Banquet. It is a beautiful version with Philip Glass on strings.

Rubeet posted a live version on YouTube. Maybe it's what VegasGirl meant?

Sire put out a maxi single of "Uncertain Smile" which had multiple versions of the song if I recall.

I have that 12" in my garage as well as a promo 12". I'll investigate and see if it contains an acoustic version.

I double-checked my copy of Sire's Uncertain Smile 12" and the version is not acoustic. I've been a somewhat dedicated The The fan over the years and I've never heard an acoustic version of Uncertain Smile. Not to say it doesn't exist - if one does exist I'd be very interested to hear it. However, the Sire extended mix (10:00 minute track time) does have a slightly acoustic feel to it - more toned-down relative to the original 7". Mario (msk) put this version on his Guitars and Dreams Vol. 4 Disc 2 compilation (see http://www.nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14527). You can also get it on iTunes on the 45 RPM - Singles disc.

There is only one version of the song on the Sire 12". I couldn't find any info on a possible multiple-version maxi-single on Discogs:

A side note, anyone see The The on their "The The vs. the World Tour" in 1989? I had the pleasure at the Warfield in San Francisco - is that your neck of the woods, Beatschool? Johnny Marr was fantastic - one of my alltime favorite shows.

I am in the Bay Area but didn't move here until 94, so I've missed a ton of good shows in the past. I have been lucky enough to see some great shows since I've moved here, but, alas, no Johnny Marr sightings. Maybe with Modest Mouse after the new album is released.

I still haven't spotted the "Uncertain Smile" single. I have a lot of records to go through. I do remember it as being a white-sleeve with black text promo, 12" vinyl, on Sire Records if I recall correctly. I'll keep searching.

I have a 12 inch 45 RPM promo version of the song that includes the 7:14 stripped down version and a 3:57 editted version on the flip side. But the label reads "Edits from the Sire Maxi Single UNCERTAIN SMILE 0-29878"

I guess I falsely assumed that the maxi version would have more songs. Sorry.
