EXCELLENT score on the St Etienne items!!!
I paid full price for them when they came out.
And I'm awaiting the arrival of What Have You Done For Me Marvin Day (or something like that; I don't have it in front of me yet, so I'm relying on imperfect memory).

I had heard that when Tower Records opened a store, they owned the property the store was on. I also heard that Tower Records was bought by another company. Instead of being their savior, this other company decided to liquidate Tower Records, since the property that the stores are on is worth more than the franchise itself. What happens to those locations is anyone's guess.

I have been doing my fair share of going to Tower and scooping up stuff. Most of it was done when things were at 25% off (I didn't want to risk losing out on some things), and some things at 30% and 40% off (I would've waited till things were 50% off, but people were beating me to a lot of it). Luckily, I did get the Bob Geldof anthology at 40% off, so I shouldn't complain.

Stopped in there last night after being enticed by 40-60% off signs.

You know, even with that much marked off, a lot of their stuff is still way overpriced.

I did come away with a couple of CDs, however. I had lost my "Floodland" CD and picked up a replacement for $5. And I picked this up (http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetai ... mber=73198) for a few bucks.

There was a Culture Club 4-CD box set that I should have bought....

And Sean, it's not just California Tower employees that look all Goth and alternative. Tower employees are scary looking here. The girl that checked me out looked like a Goth space alien. I have a thing for redheads, but damn. She scared me.

DECEMBER 14,1998 :Eight years ago TOWER RECORDS PHILIPPINES opened it's first record shop at GLORIETTA MAKATI CITY. I was fortunate to be one who had a ticket, which I personally got from NU107, to grace the occasion. There was free dinner for those who have the tickets and a free mini-concert by GARY VALENCIANO "MR.PURE ENERGY".Of course there was also a free promotional CD for us. The ZOBEL DE AYALA's clan(PINOY BUSINESS TYCHOONS) were also there.

It's just sad that recently TOWER RECORDS sold the franchise to MISIC ONE but still the materials retained. So all TOWER RECORDS here in the PHILIPPINES were changed to MUSIC ONE.

The original Tower store closes Wednesday, so I took a look-see today at lunch. Pretty depressing scene; the shelves were almost empty. Every cd 80% off, so I figured what do I have to lose:

The Lucy Show - Mania
Marshall Crenshaw - Downtown
apb - Radio 1 Sessions
apb - Something to Believe in 20th Anniversary
Spear of Destiny - Radio 1 Live
Ultravox - Systems of Romance
Elliot Easton - Change No Change
Mark Hollis - s/t
John Foxx - Golden Section Tour & Omnidelic Exotour
A Certain Ratio - I'd Like to See You Again
Propaganda - Outside World

NNNW:
fountains of wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers

Prices ranged from $2.40 - $4.60!! Not too familiar w/ any of these titles. I know a little about the artists thanks to you folks here at NWO.
So here I am stuck at work w/ no cd player. Now it's off to allmusic.com to read some reviews & see if I got bargains or threw my money away.

[/quote]Your whole list was filled with great pickups. I went to Tower in Atlanta yesterday and saw jack squat at $4.00 a piece.

There is a song on Mania called "Melody" that is in my top 5 favorite songs from the 80's. It's like this ridiculous gem sitting amongst a few dated sounding, but decent pop tunes. Actually, there are about four songs on that album I truly love.

The Seattle Tower closed yesterday (Friday the 22nd), so I couldn't resist going one last time the day before to see if there were any last bargains to be had. Well, just like Brock's Atlanta visit, it was pretty depressing; a few racks of 80% off cd's that probably can't even be given away for free! I wish that wasn't my last view of a store I had been visiting since the late 70's, but eventually the good memories will return of browsing the import bins, seeing the very first cd releases, and picking up cool cds and lps you couldn't find elsewhere.

I can say I did score some pretty good stuff during the past couple of months'liquidation. Favorite finds: David Bowie - Serious Moonlight Tour DVD, Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair era DVD including incredible live performances, INXS compilation DVD, Joe Jackson DVD, All About Eve - Import 2 cd compilation, four Marshall Crenshaw re-issues, North by Northwest - a very cool import compilation of the Liverpool new wave scene, three Pete Townshend remasters, two "Another Lost Decade" 80s compilations, Billy Bragg - The Internationale reissue with bonus DVD, two Adam Ant import remasters, and a few of the Echo and The Bunnymen remasters. Probably forgetting some stuff, but not too bad overall!

A guy I work with said that Rasputin Records is opening a branch in the Mountain View, CA location. If I lose my local Tower but get a Rasputin in its place, that would be ok by me.
