See, I didn't take it as irony. It looks like they're self-servingly excusing themselves while still doing it, especially in light of the droves of teenage girls who got all weepy over it. I still cringe after all these years. It's like Pilate washing his hands and blaming the Jews but doing the deed anyway. Okay, maybe that's an OT exageration. [:I]

Cynically (or accidentally?) having their cake and eating it too by having a hit sappy ballad while making fun of sappy ballads? If I'm mistaken and they were really serious then I've lost a lot of respect for Depeche Mode. That song could have been written by Dan Hill.

If I forgave New Order for the World Cup horror that was "World in Motion", I can certainly forgive DMode for this...maybe.[:D]

Clouds Above The Moon - The Rah Band

Every time I hear it it always makes me well up, it's so sad the way she misses her husband so much while he cheats on her. [:(]

Love Is Stronger Than Death - The The
30kft - Assemblage 23
One Step From Heaven - The Adventures
Memories Of Reason - Thomas Leer
Everytime I See You - Fra Lippo Lippi
Upside Down - Two Minds Crack
Somebody - Depeche Mode
Home - Depeche Mode

and one I was teased about for so long that when I finally heard it I had a major melt down...Whispered In Heaven - Great Divide...will never forget the special person who enligtened my ears and heart with the song.

That should leave a big enough puddle for now!

Pogues: Fairytale Of New York
Alison Moyet: For You Only
The Cure: Pictures Of You

I'm sure there are others that will make me misty but these are the two that come to immediate mind. From the looks of the messages on this thread Alison Moyet is really good at invoking a good cry!

That entire album "Dusk" by The The is just amazing.
It was intended for the "Lost, Lonely and Lustful"
I had to go buy it after seeing them open for Depeche Mode one year.
The band has new wave roots, but I think this came out in the 90's.
Totally love the album, I'll have to go listen to it now, and get sad, and almost teary at times, and get some of the poison out.

I can't think of any strictly new wave songs that have that effect. I'll go with:

NIN - Something I Can Never Have
and
Husker Du - Too Far Down

If you understand a bit of german then 'Mit Dir' by Robert Görl (formerly of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft) is certainly one of the most beautiful and melancholy songs I've ever heard.
Next runner up left me literally in tears when it started to play at the end of the film '1984'....'Julia' by the Eurythmics.
'Here Comes the Flood' - Peter Gabriel
'Walk On By' and 'Always the Sun'- The Stranglers
'Inbetween Days' - The Cure

I don't really get teary eyed by any New Wave songs, except Lament by Ultravox! All the other songs that have been mentioned, as well as many others just give me goose bumps...
