The Banner Year in NW

Postby SuNomi » Sat Jan 06, 2007 6:45 am

If you were to select the most significant year in music for our beloved genre which would it be? (and provide 5 examples to back it up)

For me it would be 1981

1. The Go-Go's become first all-famale band to enter Top 40
2. URGH! A MUSIC WAR released theatrically
3. X Releases "Wild Gift", their most critically acclaimed album
4. Two-Tone Ska reaches it's cultural peak with DANCE CRAZE film
5. First synthpop #1 hit "Don't You Want Me Baby" by Human League

I agree with your choices, and I'm adding one more to it.

6)Kraftwerk releases Computer World, which is not only a seminal electronic album, but directly influenced Afrika Bambaataa ( with Numbers and the earlier Trans Europe Express)to record the crossover hip-hop electro hit Planet Rock.

Not exactly a new wave moment, but cool how in 1977 Kraftwerk helped kick off the new wave genre and in 1981 did the same thing with hip hop and electro-funk.

I didn't compose this list by myself. I found it few years ago somewhere on the web, don't even remember the link. I was also hoping to find another years in review, but there was only the 1981 which we all agreed is the banner year for NW.

I thought I'd look at it from the Top 40 perspective. That is the UK Top 40 because as we know very few New Wave songs actually made it to the US Top 40. It' hard deciding what is new wave and what isn't. Is Paul Young new wave? UB40 new wave? Personally I'd have to say 1983 was the year for me.

I am going with 1981 as well, mostly for personal reasons:

1. Started college in Seattle just as local college station KCMU switched over to new wave/modern rock. With so many bands breaking out, it was a dream playlist all day long! A few of the more mainstream releases follow, but bands like X, Echo, and The Go Go's were all breaking out big.
2. The Pretenders - Pretenders II.
3. The Police - Ghost In The Machine
4. U2 - October
5. The Clash were huge in the world of punk/new wave. The catch phrase "The Only Band That Matters" seemed true during that time period!

It's not the same topic, but it's a fun and classic thread to recall with a venerable cast of characters like mygreen, myirwin, knowitallrecs, natephish, middlesexnj and even philly...in a music post of all places!

Ha - I was thinking of that old thread when I was reading this one, Blir; I may have actually had more posts than Philly at that point!

I still think it's tough to let go of any of those years in that range of '79 to '82. I think I'd go with '79 with just a one-year pick,

'79 was when I had just gotten into it, at age 13, and it was so damn fresh and I was so giddy about this music that I can recall my heart pounding, coming home with each new record I could afford to get my hands on.

Every now and then it's fun to re-check the release dates on some of your favorites - - you'll be amazed at how your mind plays tricks on you.

I think 1980, 1981, and 1982 (my senior year in high school) were the banner years for New Wave. Below is the KROQ 106.7 FM radio station's countdown for 1981. The KROQ countdown was started in 1980. Enjoy!

I was surprised to see several gems, a some mainstream rock 'n' roll, which I now recall by looking over the list, and all in all I think this is the better year among '80, '81, and '83!!!

<br>I agree with your choices, and I'm adding one more to it.

I always liked popcorn and can remember my Rock and roll parents listening to the record all of the time.

1979-1982 showed a few breakthrough songs from new wave entering the charts, but it was probably not until MTV hit enough homes (with the major record companies refusing to play their "giants") and top 40 radio stations finally got to see the spririt that it really wasn't until 1983 that it took up the storm it did in the U.S. Of course, those of us who had KROQ (and even "pop" radio station KIQQ) in Los Angeles were a little bit more ahead of the curve--is that why West California was not included in Kim Wilde's prediction? We were already there? [:D]
