INXS has a coupla songs that were kinda popular for a brief moment and then radio stations never played them again. The first one I thought was "The Stairs" off their 1990 album, X. The other one is also an INXS song: "Beautiful Girl" off their album Welcome To Wherever You Are. Those two songs are not only INXS's best, but also some of the best songs of the 90s[:0]

Following that train of thought, Madonna's "Angel" from the single off her second album. It's one of my favourite Madonna songs and hardly ever got airplay even when Like A Virgin was big (at least in my neck of the woods). I also like "This Used To Be My Playground," but I recently heard that over the radio[:I]

DeMode's albums Some Great Reward and Black Celebration are rife with album tracks and b-sides which are just as good, if not, then better than the singles spawned therein. Here are some which did not get airplay and are seldom listed as people's favourites from the band:

"Something To Do"
"Lie To Me"
"Stories Of Old"
"If You Want"
"Fools"
"World Full Of Nothing"
"Here Is The House"
"A Question Of Lust" - the "minimal" version is THE best song ever made by DeMode[}:)]

I could make a similar list for The Smiths and Morrissey of songs which are often ignored, disliked, or forgotten... starting with "Oscillate Wildly"!

Man, I could respond to this thread every couple of weeks...a favorite topic for sure.

The Jam - Liza Radley (damned melodious)
The Cars - Got a Lot On My Head (what a starting riff!)
Adam & the Ants - Friends (favorite call-out song of all time)
Joy Division - Wilderness (spookiest drums ever)
New Order - Turn My Way (classic dreamer NO, Billy Corgan guest to boot)
The Clash - Straight to Hell (yeah we've heard of it, but others...)
Simple Minds - The American (again, not by us but by most...)
Depeche Mode - Something to Do (weird Oingo Boingo kinda thing going on, eh XXX?)
The Cure - Subway Song (a cool, almost bluesie beatnickie song)
The Pretenders - Cuban Slide (the gem of the EP imho)
The Plimsouls - Hobo (they were legendary to me..and even I forgot)
Devo - Gates of Steel (thanks for the reminder Spaz)
Human Sexual Response - Pound (per Geoffe's thread)
OMD - Georgia (never really understood it...but always loved it)
The Human League - Seconds (head & shoulders my favorite)

And one that instantly takes me back, Split Enz' Poor Boy..."My love is alien..." Man, I've criminally neglected this song over the years.

No. Not the album/single version of "A Question Of Lust," but the minimal version. No radio station will play those even if the original song does. Joe Crow's "Compulsion" is a cover song from Martin L. Gore's "Counterfeit" e.p. It's a good song... probablty the 2nd best song off that 5 song collection. The best cover in there is "In A Manner Of Speaking."

I could never understand why The Human League's Dare! and Love And Dancing (is that what that album was called? I ferget...) years get dissed so much. Those albums are bleedingly awersome! Coincidentally, I was watching this cheapie HK kung fu/ninja movie from the 80s and one of the featured songs was by The Human League[:0] Of course, it was used without permission, but it kicked so much ARRRRGHSE![}:)] "These are the things these are the things that dreams are made of..." Favourite hands-down, without a doubt - and definitely neglected - is "Darkness" from Dare![8D]

The Smiths- Barbarism begins at home (it's better than How soon is now? if you ask me)
New Order- Brutal (love it! love it! the version in the Finsbury Park show DVD... oh god!!) [:D]
Short-term effect- The Cure
Boy racer- Morrissey (yet again... not all popular compared to other Morrissey/The Smiths songs)
Lillian- Depeche Mode (it's the best song in the Playing The Angel album by far)
Exercise One- Joy Division (they played it a lot live but it's not one of their "popular" tunes)

A Question Of Lust doesn't get played that much on the radio but it's a popular song still. [;)]

"What's My Name?" by the Clash. So overlooked that it didn't make the best Clash song poll a few months ago! Probably my favorite Clash song.

I'll chime in a few off the top of my head:

The Cars - Gimme Some Slack (love the Stonesy guitar riff)
Blondie - Accidents Never Happen
U2 - Out of Control
Depeche Mode - It's Called a Heart
The Clash - Brand New Cadillac (rip-roaring blues rocker)
Talking Heads - Pulled Up (catchy and upbeat - ironically so?)
The B-52's - 52 Girls
The Police - So Lonely
Duran - Hold Back the Rain (lost behind the other great songs on Rio)
The Smiths - Death at One's Elbow (catchy and macabre)

Ah yes, how could we have missed all of these in a "legendary bands" thread? Especially Rex Smith.
