Morrissey...and Mexicans?!

Postby Frau_Blucher » Thu Apr 19, 2007 5:31 am

I happened to mention the upcoming Morrissey tour to a Hispanic buddy of mine in LA last week. To my surprise he goes "Oh yeah, he's huge in the LA Mexican community." I'm like, "Huh?!" So I did a little digging as to why and found this interesting article...

Then there's also the mostly Hispanic tribute band Sweet and Tender Hooligans...

Just something I never noted before.

Strange, when one considers his politics in regards to ethnics.

Yes, this is true. As a boy, my father would translate for us the gaucho or ranchero music that he so admired. Themes of melancholy, longing, heartbreak and bittersweetness are woven into these musics just as it is in much of Morrissey's lyrics. His singing style can be compared in this way also. I'm certain this is a big part of why I've always been a huge fan of the Smiths and Morrissey. Alot of music, actually.

Yes, he is very huge in the Mexican community, at least in Southern California. I'm not Mexican but I know a lot of friends that are and they not only like Morrissey, they worship him. If you go to a Morrissey concert down here, the majority of people that are there are Mexican. The ones that are real New Wavers, I don't mind. The wannabe's that just like Morrissey because they've heard a few songs and like the way he cuts his hair annoys me like heck. The bad thing is there are more of the wannabe's than the real New Wavers. Even my Mexican friends that are real New Wavers can't stand these guys. But to think of it, it's better that they are wannabe's and they are buying Morrissey cd's rather than supporting stuff like Justin Timberlake, Usher, etc. [:)]

What's his attitude towards ethnicity?

I'm sure he's big all over Latin America. This one guy I know -- Columbian, I suppose -- has a Smiths shirt and a Morrissey shirt. Being Hispanic myself, I don't know if Morrissey is the right messenger for the plight of our people. And by "our people," I mean kids who were born in the mid- to late-'80s in Miami.

It all depends on your interpretation of course.

There is a Smiths/Moz cover band here in San Diego, they have a huge 'raza' fan base...in fact they wear "Moz Crew" t shirts done in the lowrider type (the font face is actually 'Berliner')...pretty interesting...actually there is a huge New Wave/ synthpop faction in Tijuana....

Well, I'm going to see him on the 27th here in Stockton.
There is a very large Hispanic community here so it'll be interesting to see who shows.
