New -wave magazines?

Postby newwavepunkgirl » Fri Apr 20, 2007 9:48 pm

Yesterday I boughta book which was 'smash hits' in the '80s, I used to get it when I was a kid/teen so had to get that book. (Sadly no DEVO in it, sob!)Did you guys get that or did you have your own magazines that were more new-wave orinated? Just interested to know! (Smash Hits ceased production recently but I always saw it as an 80s magazine in anycase seeing as that was the peek of good pop/rock music!) Kinda like 'Kerrang' is the rock version of that. Anyhow I think it's a fun enough question!Als o in American magazien do they have silly articles and comments in it? (The American rock magazines I have read seem more serious and 'grown-up'I have to say)

Here in the US I'd say Trouser Press was the best source for new-wave coverage, at least in terms of being readily available in news-stands everywhere.

Creem also embraced new wave and absolutely introduced me to alot of great bands.

On this side of the pond we had the same mag, but it was called Star Hits, and it was awesome ! All the best new wave bands, enough obscure bands too, great pictures, song lyrics!, interviews, articles, contests (winning the Duran Duran video album was THE highlight of my teen years, hee hee), and more. True, they were heavily Duran-oriented, to the extreme, but they provided great coverage of everybody.
Creem, I always thought, was metal and rock-oriented, but they had a surprising amount of New Wave. Mostly they had THE BEST captions under pictures! Those would crack me up.
Melody Maker was super cool but hard to find.

The Mod/Ska scene in Los Angeles had many home-spun 'zines; however, the slickest was "Twist." Which I believe had only a hand-full of issues. Covers included The Untouchables, 20/20, The Plimsouls, and The Moving Targets! Haven't thought about any 'zines in a long time!

I was considering buying that book myself until I looked inside it and saw that it concentrated on the late '80s and bags of shite like Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Cure etc.

Despite its core audience, Smash Hits had a very liberal attitude towards music and covered bands like The Look (two page article!), Small Ads, Planets, Malaria!, Annie Anxiety etc and helped me to get into some great music.

Record Mirror and Sounds were poorer versions of SH and the most well-known fanzine was Sniffing Glue which was excellent at covering the emerging punk scene of the late 70's and would recommend getting the book of it.

I strongly recommend to all to purchase NME's Punk anthology magazine as it covered the period in detail with some great interviews.

Not strictly magazines but The Rock Yearbook series by Virgin was excellent, taking a different slant to what was going in the musical world.

I subscribed to Trouser Press until its demise.

I remember getting THE FACE during the 80's.

Well I didn't pay full rpice for the book so that changed my mind, the Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran articles swung it plus I wanted all the covers,ok, ok and there's a free Johntaylor poster with it, actually it was worth it just ot see the adverts for the old antique computers![:D][:D][:D]Though bizarrely there is an oxy ad in it and hte girl is wearing a stripey sweater, tight jeans and converse sneakers, I have clothes like that now, have you noticed how '80s fashion has come back in the UK frank? But I love retro clothes as long as htey are tasteful, no shoulder-pads puffballs or neon fo rme thanks![:D]

Thats' intersting that it had a different name over there! Oh yes it did have alot of Duran Durna in it but Iguess that was a sellign point for me as I was a Duranie (but I got it 'cos I liked Toyah and Adma and the Ants before that! Yeah I did paint the stripey line on my nose like Adam Ant,freinds have confessed to doing that too, I remember my mom and dad had to get me a facepaint kit so I coulddo that and Toyah's make-up. LOL. I was a strange child. LOL!)It's kinda tragic what happened to Adam Ant, he went mad didn't he?! He is an odd fellow isn't he?! I cant' listen to their music now except 'Ant music' when you think about it bands like that woudl be way too raucous to be considered pop now, ah growing up in the post-punk era, what fun! LOL!It expalins why I liked Nirvana though Kurt Cobain's up there with Adam Ant on the off-key vocals LOL![:D]

Certainly have nwpg, and have to admit I do have a thing for female power dressing of the 80s after being influenced by programmes like Connie. As for not liking neon, shame on you! You call yourself newwavepunk girl as well! [:0] [:p]

If I could find any of those neon socks I would buy a few pairs, they were cool. [:D]

Sure can't, though pictures would help to prove this (or any of now would do). [}:)][:D]

I liked Trouser Press, but it was hard to find around here. I sometimes stumbled across Flexi-pop at one of the used record stores.

I religiously read Creem. Absolutely loved that magazine. They had a big thing for Debbie Harry too, that made me love it even more.

I disliked Circus, but would buy it now & then if something cool was on the cover.

I managed to get a couple copies of Punk magazine at a second hand book store once. I wish I had kept them all!
