Ever met any New Wave artists?

Postby SallyLightfoot » Fri Apr 27, 2007 4:38 am

Although most of these were more like brief introductions, here are a few artists I've met:

Ivan & Stephen Doroschuk - Men Without Hats - Met during (!!) soundcheck at Malibu club LI gig-- I was an audience of 1 while the brothers (without rest of band) tuned-up.

Les Pattinson - Echo & the Bunnymen - I shot a hoops with him backstage before a soundcheck at Jones Beach Theatre, NY, eponomous album tour (not a great concert though).

Peter Hook - New Order - Met him briefly backstage before soundcheck at Jones Beach. He wasn't in a mood to mingle with teenage fans, though.

Saul Davies & Jim Glennie - James - Ok, maybe not new wave. I met them after a gig in NYC (supporting the "Seven" album, phenomenal concert btw).

Glenn Tilbrook - Squeeze - Met recently after a club gig in NYC.

That's all I can think of. Maybe some of you have some stories.

Hey now; that's pretty wild. You were actually part of the "talent" then. Can't get more inside than that. Any experiences/memories stick-out from those days?

I recall that I also met some of the supporting musicians (horn players) for Wang Chung before a Jones Beach concert-- that probably doesn't count though... [:D]

Wow glokstadt, that's fantastic!
Many of those bands I've never even seen live-- I wish I'd gotten the opportunity.

I didn't enter high-school until 1983, so I was kinda too young at the time to see many of these bands at the nightclubs.

I have met

Mike Score of AFOS ... nice guy, we talked for a few, got a picture with him as well. He was also telling me about some future releases and merchandises due later out this year.

Martin Fry of ABC ... very brief, but he did sign my LP so all is good!

Keren and Sara of Bananarama ... nice meet with the gals, of course I told them what my favorite song was, "Tell Tale Signs" they replied with ... "oh that reggae song we did" ... I thought it was cool, also got a picture with them

Annabella Lwin and Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow ... Annabella is such a doll, she loved me! I talked about Adam with Gorman for a few as well.

Peter Byrne of Naked Eyes ... one awesome dude! I was very happy to get the chance to talk with him and get a picture with him as well.

Lene Lovich ... that's my gal! and what a rare treat

and most recently, Graham Parker ... he was a really nice guy, I also got a picture him him, we talked about Rachel Sweet ... he has no idea what she is up to, does anyone really know?

Cy Curnin - The Fixx

I sent an e-mail to Robin Scott (M) a few years ago and he sent me back a kind response.

Devomaniac--
Another great set of artists! Many of whom are still touring, so it's possible to pay tribute!

It's funny-- the new wave artists that are now touring seem to be at a point in their careers where they're genuinely grateful for the loyalty of fans. I recently saw the documentary about the band Beulah, called "A Good Band is Easy to Kill." Buelah's case definitely showed how difficult it is to keep fan-base delighted when you've been touring for 200 days straight, sleeping in vans/tour buses, etc.

I definitely hope to catch ABC on tour this year, and I'd jump at the chance to see Lene Lovich-- I have such deep respect for her musicianship.

When I was about 12, the Thompson Twins (my favourite band back then (I even got the ponytail) opened a record store (HMV)in my home city Edinburgh.

I remember thinking I was going to be disappointed because they wouldn't have time to say anything other than sign the cassette and send you on your way.

I was right about the time limitations, but Tom (you could only meet one of them because the place was heaving with fans) was very nice. I remember being pretty star-struck and nervously muttering my first AND last name [:I] for him to sign and him smiling and saying "let's just do the first name". I took the cassette and walked away and heard him say "hey", I looked back and he said "you take care of yourself". What a guy. Never forgotten that.
