Whats with all the New Wave songs in commercials?

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

Can anyone count how many movies in the past two years have revived the Clash's "Police and Thieves"?

More recently, "Knocked Up", I think. It was also in Hot Fuzz and Reno 911.

There were prolly others, too. Good to hear it, though! Hell, that song wasn't even a single was it?

DirecTV is using The Ramone's cover version of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" to advertise their HD channels.

I can't believe that y'all didn't mention possibly the most bizarre and WTF-y usage of a punk/NW-era song in a commercial this year. Let me refresh your memory: Buzzcocks. "Everybody's Happy Nowadays". AARP. As in the American Association Of Retired Persons. Cue a bunch of confused-as-hell seniors and bemused-as-hell cusp baby boomer/Gen X-ers.

Yeah, I caught that and thought the same thing :)
I always trip on the Lust for Life song for the Cruise commercials. Hmmmm, if they really knew what Iggy was singing about [;)][:D]

Just saw/heard that last night, and a few more to boot:

Hampton Inn: The Romatics - Talking In Your Sleep
G2 (whatever that is?!): Lou Reed - Take A Walk On The Wild Side (I know not new wave--NNW!)
Papa John's Pizza: J. Giels Band - Freeze Frame (I know NNW!)
That Nissan car agin that was using The Clash's cover of Pressure Drop, is now playing "I Melt With You," as performed by a female artist, sounding like Natalie Merchant (formally of 10,000 Maniacs), I don't know who it is. Anyone?

There are a few more, will need to rack my brain... until then! [:)]

EMF's "Unbelievable" is used in some cheesy Cheese product commercial as: "It's Crumb-ba-lie-valbe!"

Actually, I started that topic in a previous thread with that song.
<a href="http://www.nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17145">New Wave Songs In Commercials</a>

That's not important. What is astonishing is that the commercial has been in place over a year using "Everybody's Happy Nowadays". Evidently, the AARP has had more success with that song in the U.S. than Buzzcocks ever had!

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

http://www.iol.ie/~carrollm/av/covers.htm

The one you heard might be the one by Youth Group.

Thanks for the link! Nope, my computer is not up yet... I got the E-commerce/website guru from the SBDC working on my harddrive at Santa Moinica College right now, loads of corrupted files, so I'm using one of the Small Business Development Center's (SBDC) computers right now; hopefully, I'll have a computer tonight (wishing real hard!!!) Seems my power supply blew on my lousy e-Machine© which blew a resister on the motherboard, and somehow gave the HD some bad files, or whatnot, OK enough...
