<br>it reminds me of my youth, when looking "weird" meant taking a risk every time you walked out the door. When you got chastised for being a fan of "that fag music". When you didn't get invited to the party because people were afraid you'd bring your Vapors record. When there was something new and exciting to discover around every corner, and each week brought several new discoveries and favorite band.

A kid asked me if I was "punk" in the '80s. I said, "No, I was more what you'd call goth, but they didn't call it goth then."
"What did they call it?," the kid inquired.
I replied, "They called it, 'Hey faggot!'"
Why do I like New Wave music? I suppose why you like any kind of music is because you like the way it stimulates your brain. Songs such as OMD's "Enola Gay" or The The's "This is the Day" light up certain receptors for pure pleasure and they always will. I lost interest in pop music when New Wave's influence waned and Grunge came storming in. I'm not going to say Nirvana and Pearl Jam suck, but that their music does not excite my mind. Right now I'm listening to the new symhony by the Estonian composer Arvo Part ("In Principio"). This music excites my brain in a different way from, say, A Flock of Seagulls' "Space Age Love Song," but the result is the same.
