Devo - Duty Now and New Traditionalists

Devo - Duty Now and New Traditionalists

These two reissues coming out in the next few months continue the tradition of having disappointing bonus tracks! If you have Pioneers Who Got Scalped and Recombo DNA, you already have all the bonus tracks on these:

Wow, they even left "Working In A Coalmine" (an essential track) and "Mecha-Mania Boy" (an awesome track that was on the Infinite Zero release) off New Traditionalists. They couldn't do a worse job on this if they actively tried.

well, as "coalmine" is not actually THEIR song to license as they fit, perhaps the rights have become too expensive? perhaps its on a myriad other releases? perhaps they just don't want to add it, as is their right?

oh sure, insta-rant and cynicism is easier. but better? hmm.

What a strange selection of bonus tracks, Be Stiff? And some Shout out-takes stuck on the end of New Traditionalists.

I'll stick with my Japanese Devo Box I think :)

It's their performance and their (or Warner Bros.') master. The publishing fee they have to pay out to the orginal composers can't amount to THAT much. Certainly no more than "Satisfaction."

nope. not "shout."

although it doesn't make much sense why some of these are here. "faster" and "modern life" and "one dumb thing" all date from the "oh no" sessions. "nutra" is the b-side of "beautiful world" i think, and "psychology..." would evolve into "super thing"- these i get. i'll concede the EZ version too, because it's appropriate.

but "coalmine"- really? baffling.

and p.s. to rsgonzalez: i don't know, they could have been much worse. at least the whole set is remastered. probably from the japanese release.

It would cost a maximum of $.091 per unit, to be exact. (This is the statuatory rate for mechanical licenses)

True. Maybe we get spoiled by all the good re-releases out there with lots of bonus tracks. But Devo is known to have a ton of stuff in their archives; it would be nice to get to hear more of it.

If the CDs are remastered and sound amazing, then I might pick them up. But I've already got the albums on CD, and they sound just fine to this non-audiophile.

Didn't they not include "Turn Around" on the FOC re-release? That one I would consider absolutely essential, since as far as I know, it only came out on the Virgin 2-fer CD with bad sound. (The Recombo DNA version was a demo.)

We're not even talking a mechanical license (since the master of the perfomance is already owned by Devo/WB), we're talking a publishing fee (to the original composers of "Coalmine.") I'm guessing, aggregated out, the cost is even less than that.

Bottom line, it being a cover version could not be the reason it's omitted from this reissue. As I pointed out, they certainly didn't drop "Satisfaction" from Q: Are We Not Men...

In Australia 'Working in a coalmine' was the bonus single with the 'New Tradionalist' album. The song was originaly from the Animated Movie soundtrack album 'Heavy Metal'.

you are right- and why this track has not been out baffles me. i don't know that it sounds too bad on the virgin 2-fer, although perhaps memories of buying all of those 2-fers almost 15 years ago are clouding my memory with youthful nostalgia. at any rate, it IS available on itunes as a digital b-side to whip it, if i remember. and that's probably better than the cd, perhaps. audiophiles will argue, certainly.

Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but I can't help but think they've got something up their sleeve.

Maybe there will be a new remastered compilation or something from the DEVO archives. The hit and miss approach does seem to lend itself to something like that because tracks like the original Be Stiff EP, Turnaround, and Coalmine are essential.

I am optimistic they are aware of this and hopefully will address it with a nice deluxe comp after all of the releases are put out. If not, they really missed the boat.

this would be nice- and perhaps the 7" "doctor detroit" and "luv luv" might surface? the extended "that's good" and "speed racer"?
sure, those last two can be made by anyone with editing software, but still.
