Don't forget Monaco in which he also sang vocals. And now he has Freebass.

The name of an early incarnation of Gleaming Spires was''Bates Motel''and had a song on the Planet label compilation''Sharp Cuts''.

Nena were called in late 70s ''Rumblers''and played a hybrid of bar rock and power pop.

The real surname of Mael Brothers is ''Day''so they used to spread around in mid 70s that they were actually children of Doris Day.

Ian Dury's first musical collective were The Kilburn and the High Roads in early seventees,a type of theatrical pub rock band which had also as a member a very young Nick Cash whom later formed 999.

New Wave combo Jane Air and the Belvedeers were actually the modish pop punk band The Edge having as members a post London,Damned drummer Jon Moss and Damned guitarist Lu Edmonds.Jane Air was also from Akron,Ohio just like Chrissie Hynde and Rachel Sweet.Jon Moss later became the official drumer(and lover?) of Boy George band the Culture Club.

Is that fact or a myth?

just read an excellent book about John Hughes and found out some interesting things about the music used in his films

Dont You Forget About Me was originally offered to Bryan Ferry but turned it down due to a death in the family and then to the Euryhtmics who also turned it down
Simple Minds who were basically forced to record the song and hated it until they played it during the Live Aid concert the same year and were amazed at the reception it had and have played it live ever since and saw the impact of the song on the fans
It would be their highest charting single in the USA

The Cure wrote a song for Ferris Bueller's Day Off specifically for the musuem scene but when John Hughes got in a dispute with his collaborator at A M Records, the Cure were dropped and another music producer was brought in and used the Dream Academy's version of the Smiths Please let me get what I want
this could be the reason there was no soundtrack for the film was released

the OMD song for Pretty in Pink to be used was Goddess of Love but was changed by the band after seeing the film and composed If You Leave
Goddess of Love appears on the Pacific Age record

Howard Deutch who directed Pretty in Pink did not like new wave music and wanted to use music like Jackson Browne, the Eagles, etc for the soundtrack but John Hughes had ultimate control and knew that the younger generation listened and liked modern music and not 70's rock style music or artists in general

The Some Kind of Wonderful ST marked the first releae of Hughes Music which planned to support and release records for new talent but the label fell through the cracks
