Arizona fugitive planned suicide by bear, report says
by Felicia Fonseca - Jan. 27, 2011 04:32 PM
Associated Press

FLAGSTAFF - A convicted killer who escaped from an Arizona prison had planned to overdose on heroin at Yellowstone National Park and let bears eat him, according to a sheriff's report.

Tracy Province told a sheriff's detective after his capture that he had wanted to go up on a mountain, shoot up a gram of heroin and "be bear food." As he was preparing the drug, a voice told him not to go through with the plan, and he changed course in favor of trying to hitchhike to Indiana to see family.

"He called it divine intervention," Mohave County sheriff's Detective Larry Matthews wrote in the August report.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported Province's interview Thursday.

Authorities say Province asked fellow convict John McCluskey and their alleged accomplice, Casslyn Mae Welch, to take him to Yellowstone, so they drove him to the Wyoming park from New Mexico. Province doesn't name anyone else in the interview with Matthews, but it's clear whom he's with.

The trio faces capital murder and carjacking charges in New Mexico.

Province has pleaded guilty to Arizona charges of escape, kidnapping, aggravated assault and armed robbery and is scheduled to be sentenced Friday. He then will be sent to New Mexico to face charges there.

Province, McCluskey and a third inmate, Daniel Renwick, escaped from a minimum-security prison near Kingman on July 30. Authorities say Welch helped them flee by throwing cutting tools over the perimeter fence.

Province told Matthews about his plan to commit suicide after he was returned to Arizona from Wyoming, where he was captured Aug. 9 in the sleepy town of Meeteetse, steps from a church where he sat in the pews and sang "Your Grace is Enough." A woman he talked to after church recognized him from a photograph on television.

Al Nash, a spokesman at Yellowstone National Park, said it's certainly possible that Province's plan to let bears eat him would work, but it struck him as improbable.

"We have a fair number of bears in the ecosystem," Nash said. "They eat about anything. A bear would rather get an easy meal than a difficult meal, but human bear encounters are very infrequent."

His plan sucked. He should have went to Yellowstone and tied steaks around his neck. that would attract more bears than heroin.

This reminds me of the old Hunter and the Bear joke!

Once there was this hunter, out in the forest, hunting bears.

As the hunter approached a clearing in the forest, he saw a bear. One of the biggest bears he'd ever seen. So he crouches down behind a largish rock, takes careful aim with his shotgun, and fires. After the smoke clears, he runs down to the clearing, and the bear's body is gone!

He searches the clearing, but to no avail. Then there's a tap-tap-tap on his shoulder. The hunter looks around, and it's the bear! "You just tried to kill me, didn't you?". Says the bear."Uh, no. No I didn't". The hunter, taken aback by a talking bear, lies."Yes you did. Don't lie, or I'll rip your arms off" "Uh, yeah, yeah I did." "Alright", says, the bear, "I'll let you go if you do one thing for me." "What's that?", inquires the hunter. "Give me a blow job." "What??" "On your knees" So, the hunter obliges, and leaves the clearing.

Well, the hunter's pissed-off. "Humiliated by a bear!", he thinks to himself. "I'll teach that bastard". He runs to the local town, and buys an Uzi sub-machine gun, and runs back to the clearing. The bear is still there, basking in the sun. "I've got you now, bear", the hunter says to himself, and opens fire from behind the rock.

Again, after the smoke clears, the hunter runs down to the clearing. No bear. Tap-tap-tap on his shoulder. Gulp. "You just tried to kill me again, didn't you?". Says the bear. "Uh, no. No I didn't", lies the hunter. "Yes you did. Don't lie, or I'll rip your legs off" "Ok! I did." "Alright", says, the bear, "I'll let you go if you do one thing for me." "What's that?", inquires the hunter. "Drop your pants and bend over" "No way!" "Ok. Prepare to get your legs ripped off." "Alright! I'll do it, you bastard" So, the hunter obliges, and leaves the clearing, walking rather gingerly.

"I'll fucking get the bastard this time", the hunter thinks to himself, and buys a rocket launcher. He runs back to the clearing, and blasts everything into oblivion. Trees are on fire, rocks are broken, the ground is scorched. Again, after the smoke clears, the hunter runs down to the clearing. No bear.

Tap-tap-tap on his shoulder. Gulp. "You're not here for the hunting, are you?", says the bear.

goes to show the huge holes in human thinking there.A bear only eats garbage & what it6 kills,Even the grizleys are turned away from dead bodies & black bears are pretty much the same.
About a decade ago I whitnessed the black bear in large numbers & for the size of the group was unusuall as there were 37 bears in a cluster in the dump & discovered they operate in a higharchy system with the females very much in charge,But even humanity thats why the females run the roosts . I watched these bear feed for hours & much later on in the night a large male tried to feast in the dump & the group started to get vocal so the queen took off from her post & turned him over after striking/biting him.He lay there till she decided to let him up & he just slowly walked away from the dump uttering growls (like swearing)
These animals have a lot more power than what you would give them credit for as they could easy over turn a car like we would throw a tennis ball.A sign up in the Oxtounge lake dump states "a black bear can run 44mph - can you" So they could beat any thourghbred horse in a sprint hands down !
The true misunderstanding of the bears is the homebody types that watch too much TV.Bears are normally very calm creatures but will avoid any entanglments as any such encounter may lead to not being able to eat tomorrow. I watched this queen feed during the night & she would rush any member of her group that got a bit too excited about what they found in bags.& I mean claw & bite. Most times jr would drop the bag & run & the queen went no further than that dropped bag , then back to her nest she made for her self with choice bags like an easyboy recliner all around her.She kept policing the group all night & the times she did attack she comes out in full fury & to whitness that was amazing as they really didn't care I was there.
The bears of that dump become acostum to people being around .But when I 1st walked into the dump the jr bears about 15 of them ran off screaming as I guess they never seen people before.
I checked the internet for black bears & behaviors & other than a bunch of stupid camping stories not much known & certainlly not what I saw that night......Some day I will return back there again for a documentery film .

Because these 3 fugitives did some bad stuff in New Mexico (carjacking, murder), they've been all over the news here. Haven't seen this story, though. Seems like a lot of work.
