So an artist who hasn't been relevant in years (and who's band's retirement was "no great loss") attends a performance of one who never was. And in an inexplicable twist of logic, this is now being touted as some kind of powerful endorsement. Ah, doublespeak at it's finest.

If his former band mate hadn't been playing, it's doubtful old Stipey would have bothered. The fact that he would sit through that just to support a friend is a testament to his character.

Their first EP and four albums were the ones I listened to for a long time. I stopped checking out their music by the Early 90's/Shiny Happy People era, but even then memories of albums like Reckoning and Fables of the Reconstruction remained good. When they were new, it was a good sound, very Byrds-based (The Byrds being a great innovative band of the Mid 60's that had the same mega-influence...carrying the torch) and something that still has the power to capture the ears. The IRS era was very important to many.

They may be not New Wave to some people's definition, but they did play a huge part in the 80's Post-New Wave/College Music scene that grew out of the people who still kept a faith in hearing new bands after the original 80's New Pop era faded away.

I'm sure he is a big fan and I'm sure she knows Michael through Bill. I highly doubt she's dancing on R.E.M.'s grave however. R.E.M.'s career never stopped Peter Buck from playing with Robyn Hitchcock on and off for 25 years.

no one said that she's dancing on R.E.M.'s grave,quite the contrary, The Humans is getting great marks from R.E.M.,Pearl Jam, that west coast coalition..I just enjoy busting dj macarena's balls, as he enjoys busting mine;
Toyah is enjoying an amazing year, touring the Safari records years retro, while winning acolades for THE HUMANS project...every female vocalist from 1980 should be having such a year...but only one is..

I have no problem with R.E.M being a topic of a New Wave discussion, and for the record I do enjoy some of their 80s stuff. Plus, for whatever it's worth, it seems R.E.M. had plenty of musical influences that overlap with New Wave ones. They were inspired by Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Television, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, and I know Michael Stipe expressed his love of Blondie.
REM was among the first of the bands to mark the transition from Wave to Alt-Rock, but it was still so early on that I'll bet they were labeled Wave quite a bit (at least in the US where the term was used for such a long time).
