> Erasure's "Wonderland" album from 1986

Oh wow, I totally forgot about this. The version on the UK/DE CD sounds like crap, with thsoe disco sounds.

And on the Mute tip, Nitzer Ebb's That Total Age included the pre-Mute "Warsaw Ghetto" on the US/CA releases, on all formats.

808 State - 90 vs 808 State - Utd State 90.

Not 80s, but Orbital's first album: the US version is more like a compilation than a proper album. On the US CD, that version of "Midnight" may be exclusive. It's an edited version of the 12".

More Erasure, but not 80s: Cowboy. The US version has a slightly different cover, most notably in the colours, and the version of "In My Arms" (?) is different. US also has two extra tracks.

Yazoo - Upstairs at Eric's: In addition to different tracks, the UK/international CD has re-done artwork.

Sinead O'Connor - The Lion and the Cobra: The European releases have a different photo of Sinead on the cover.

Chameleons UK, script of the Bridge LP and CD in Uk have extra tracks. Us version on MCA shorter.
Jesus and Mary Chain - psychocandy CD UK had "some candy talking", US version did not
Cocteau Twins - Garlands UK has early BBC sessions tacked on end, US version does not (or is it the other way around?)
Echo and Bunnymen - Crocodiles has "Do It Clean" tacked on, UK version does not.
EnglIsh Beat - original CD had different cuts on them in US and UK
Depeche Mode - US music for the masses has several bonus tracks
Just a few off the top

Obs, it was certanily the US version of 'Here's to the future days' that had 'Roll over'. I had listened plenty of times to 'Roll Under' as a 7" vinyl B side to 'King for a day' and absolutely loved it. Sometime in about 1990 i read the story of how the album was pulled and changed at the last minute due of course to Tom's illness and read also about the track 'Roll over' which i presumed was a vocal version of 'Roll under' but didn't know for sure. I finally saw a US CD version of 'Here's...' in about 1995 on a market stool and HAD to buy it. Having finally heard that track with a vocal was incredible to me having not known of it's existance for so long and waiting ten years between hearing both versions. 'Roll over' / 'Roll under' remain so special to me and i love them both. Of course in the years since i have heard a few more different versions. It's bizarre to think of such a great track being lined up for a single release only to get completely removed from the U.K. edition of the album only for it to be given to the U.K. in a new instrumental version via that B side. Come to think of it 'King for a day' had many different vocals on a version which (maybe mistakingly) was put on the 1990 'The greatest hits' which i think was TV advertised and on Telstar. On the many TTT compilations since a mixture of the two main versions of 'KFAD' have been included. I think this to down to the various companies having no idea what they are doing (as usual).

> Depeche Mode - US music for the masses has several bonus tracks

I think the majority of the CD pressings had those bonus tracks, to entice music fans to buy CDs.

Thanks. I knew there was one bonus track, but wasn't sure which. But you UK dudes did get a bonus EP with the original pressing :-). Anyways, Roll Over is a great track. Nice bass, like a lot of TT tracks.

The record companies should have continued to supply bonus tracks to cd buyers at the start of the cd vs. mp3 war and maybe they would still have a lot more people buying cd's today.

Cupid & Psyche '85 - Scritti Politti (UK vs. US CD)

US CD sounds even worse (flatter) than the UK counterpart and contains the US 7" John Potoker remix of "Perfect Way" and a slightly longer mix of "Lover To Fall", which was earmarked as the final single.

I'm sure I've said this in these forums, but what they should have done was retire the CD-DA format, and just put albums on DVD-Video discs. They didn't need to do anything with the video (perhaps just a slideshow of photos), but the benefit is a higher resolution LPCM audio track: 96kHz/24bit vs 44.1kHz/16bit.

Unlike those audiophile audio discs, almost everyone has a DVD player, so the majority can still experience an upgrade over CDs (and MP3s).

Thanks for the Scritti Politti info. I have the EU pressing, so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a US rip.

And both the "standard" and "US" versions of the CD were readily available in both the UK and the US. The "US-Version" has a banner on the booklet noting it as such and replaces "I Sleep On My Heart" and "Coup d'Etat" with the previously-released "Hot Water" and "The Chant Has Begun". So kind of a pointless reworking.

Since you mentioned Propaganda we may as well get the other ZTT-related variations out of the way first.<ul>
<li>Initial US pressings of Welcome To The Pleasuredome had a different tracklist from the LP and UK CD.
<li>The first Japanese release of (Who's Afraid Of?) The Art of Noise! replaces "Close (To The Edit)" with "Closely, Closely (Enough's Enough)" and has the 2:30 version of "Snapshot" instead of the 1:00 edit.
<li>And the original Japanese black-triangle pressing of Re-Works of Art of Noise has the live "Opus III" as a bonus track.
<li>There are two versions of Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm, one of which (originally intended for Germany I think) omits most of the narration and has different mixes of some tracks.
<li>The initial UK/Europe release of Seal's debut album has slightly different versions of many tracks and a different version altogether of "Wild".
</ul>Then:<ul>
<li>The US version of Yello's One Second added "Oh Yeah" (previously released on Stella).
<li>In addition to all the variations on the LP versions, many/most 1980s US (Capitol) pressings of The Golden Age of Wireless replaced "...Science" with the 12" version and "Windpower"/"Airwaves" with the 7" versions. But some (later?) pressings have the same mixes as the UK (EMI) CD.
<li>The US CD of Falco's 3 had remixes of "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Vienna Calling" in addition to the different cover art. But the German version had (has?) a nasty mastering error on "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".
<li>I'm pretty sure some CD versions of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's Flaunt It have different inter-ad tracks than others, but can't confirm it.
<li>Depending on which pressing you have, Jean-Michel Jarre's Zoolook CD will have the original album versions of "Zoolook" and "Zoolookologie" or the single remixes. Track order is a little different too.
<li>Maybe not as "new wave" but the US version of Basia's Time and Tide dropped a track ("Forgive and Forget"), as did Midnight Oil's Diesel and Dust ("Gunbarrel Highway").
<li>US pressings of The KLF's The White Room removed the sampled crowd noise from the Stadium House tracks for copyright reasons.
</ul>Drifting into esoterica now: early pressings of many titles like Dare!, Penthouse and Pavement, Low Life, Business As Usual and Cargo, Architecture and Morality, Working With Fire and Steel, and Vienna were mastered with pre-emphasis. So keep that in mind or you're gonna have a really tinny-sounding rip!

i am not sure about the ads, although that is ringing a bell. i DO remember a difference in samples from movies in the songs though: the UK album had the real samples, the US album had them done by voice actors/impersonators.

i think. am i high?

Madonna's first album had different US/UK vinyl versions.

The UK (& Euro) pressings had the dance mix of Burning Up, the US had the shorter version that included prominent guitars. Everybody was shorter on the UK, having an earlier fade out. It was the US version that made it onto CD though.

IS THAT THE TWELVE INCH MIX ? Out late 2010 www.robgrillo.co.uk

It also had a different version of Last Train to Trancentral. US/CA included the single/remix.
