St Etienne/Sarah Cracknell Deluxe re-issues

Postby Barmy » Sat Nov 10, 2012 1:28 pm

No active band is going to get this kind of price from a 3rd party seller, particularly St Etienne who seem to be particularly reissue prone. As a a quasi-fan I have "Sound" unopened but have no illusions as to its value. Given that everything is available on the internet no CD is worth more than $100 or so absent unique circumstances.

I am too but it is annoying that SEVEN songs available on the various releases (Japan, US, Kelly's Locker, singles) are not on a 2-CD deluxe edition. That's not even including the mixes.

I feel all their latest releases is just to squeeze out money from collectors. Re-issue, re-package, re-mastered. re-release, re-remix...etc etc...A pity really. Love the band.

Spot on... ultra limited could be added as well. Have been a supporter of them for years, but it is a shame they just try to milk their extremely loyal fanbase in recent years. Just like you, I still love the band and the music, which makes it even more sad.
If I just think of the recent US tour edition of the new album - just a few months earlier they made fans pay for a big deluxe edition of it that included way less new songs than this edition now...

The US edition was a labor of love by the band. I don't think Heavenly was behind it; basically a gift to the US (primarily) fans. Very reasonably priced, and it did not sell out at the concerts, so there will be more copies available to non North American concert attendees/rest of the world.
It's not the band milking the fans, and given the state of the musical physical media finances I for one am not complaining.

Maybe not milking, but still frustrating...there are mega fans and supporters in other parts of the world that don't get the same opportunity. The band has a massive fanbase in Australia yet no tour here for over a decade.

But this is becoming common practice for bands nowadays - they're trying to give the fans what they want, but the exorbitant prices of fill-in-the-blank (super deluxe, legacy edition, etc) is making it much harder to take - for example, limited edition sets are being bought up by collectors/sellers and on-sold for 3 times the price on the secondary market (recent example: the now sold out legacy edition of the Manic Street Preachers' "Generation Terrorists" which inexplicably is the only way you can get the remastered 3rd disc of b-sides/non-album tracks - ridiculous)

I wouldn't be complaining, if they hadn't released a so-called deluxe edition - http://www.discogs.com/Saint-Etienne-Wo ... se/3666832 - which is music-content wise way inferior to the US 2cd edition. Obviously the US edition wasn't mentioned before so lots of fans paid massive $$$ to get a remix cd, a 4-track EP and basically a bigger package with some goodies..

The most annoying are the ones like the recent Sex Pistols where to get all the CD/DVD material you have to buy a box that includes useless "memorabilia" like stickers, facsimile 45s etc.

But St Etienne WAY overdo the special editions. Words and Music is a good example--the tack-on 4-song EP on the super special fabtastic edition. Please.

that's the record company(s), not St Etienne. As I said, the US W+M was the band's doing

Thanks. Sorry for being lazy, but how is the US W&M 2CD superior to the UK 2CD? Many thanks.

The bonus disc of the UK edition just offers 12 remixes of album tracks - the US one offers further 11 Saint Etienne songs instead. At least for me that has to be considered far superior and I guess, I am not the only one who thinks that way.

Just received my deluxe edition version of 'Lipslide' by Sarah Cracknell. I was surprised to see that "Penthouse Girl, Basement Boy" was omitted. This track appears on the original album released by GUT Records. Anyone know why this isn't present on the reissue?

But several other extra tracks make up for it. Like the disco flavoured What Kind Of Love,What Happens Next,Summer Song and You Just Won Me Over.
