<br>Wow. Mockery about someone looking androgonous or "spacey" in a New Wave image thread?! That's got to take the cake for being unclear on the concept.
So, clarify the concept for us.

Bauhaus all the way! I loved that each member had his own distinct look, but they unquestionably looked like they were part of one single group.

I totally dug Ian McCulloch's poofy-on-top hairdo and baggy dark trenchies.

Loved Japan's look. Loved Kraftwerk's clean look. And I always thought The Smiths looked fantastic.

I think universally, any image of Debbie Harry from the late 70's would epitomize "NW" for anyone. Her face, her fashion and her fame did for more NW than anyone else in my opinion. Sure there are many other cool figures but she is it IMO.

Yesterday, a friend of mine (who has succesfully been trained) spent 1 hour watching The Cure and Echo And The Bunnymen videos, watching Ian, Robert and Simon Gallup and saying "oh how cute!! I want a boyfriend that looks like that!".
Morrissey and Johnny Marr are very elegant... cool hairdo's too... keeping it simple (maybe Barney could learn from Johnny how to carry a nice cut[;)]).

I don't know about best, but Devo's film on Sat Night Live just blew me away. I remember being around some hippy friends who hated it, I argued with them that this sort of thing was going to be the future. Who would have thought that the future would involve hippies and electroclash in the nineties? Kraftwerk also looked cool back then, Trans Europe was a great album cover.

I loved the B-52s image too - fun, original, pretty wierd and suited the music perfectly.

Yeah!!! This thread is making me think of all the types of guys that'd make hot "friends".

The chick from Krisma in the "Water" video. She's wearing this wide-shouldered black dress that's very triangular, and a short-ass skirt. She looks sexy shakin' her thing. The outfit looks very Klaus Nomi-like, but a woman's wearing it.

[br]A lot of talk here recently of disliking style over substance, but image and style were an undeniably big part of New Wave, although hopefully not over the music itself. So then, who in your opinion had the coolest style or image and why?

I'll cast my vote, as of now at least, for Peter Murphy. His voice, his face, his look...everything was in perfectly dark unison with his music. The dude was/is a pretty damned cool customer!
.... agreed! Might I go one further and point out Murphy's collabaration with Japan's Mick Karn, Dalis Car, was the ubermost exercise in pretension and image? In an interview with Q magazine a few years back, Karn countered the Q that Dalis Car were the height of pretension with the line that "believe me, Pete wanted to make it a lot more pretencious than it ended up being".

Man, I love that album, never has Karn's wobbly organic bass been so to the fore, and with great artsy titles like "Cornwall Stone", "Judgement is the mirror", and "Artemis". On the sleevenotes the drummer was listed as summat like "Rhythyms designed by Paul Lawford"!
