Simple Minds - Themes 1-5 box set on 6-17-08!

Postby bigwavedave » Sat Jul 05, 2008 2:56 pm

That's a bummer. As I have most of what would make up the new portion (Themes 5?) on cd singles, I think I will be passing on this one.

> but i didn't look at the discs (i never do - i suck, i know) until i repeatedly tried loading one of them into my computer to make a best of the themes cd and my computer kept getting "stuck" on one of the tracks. finally i popped the disc out, flipped it over and it looked not unlike a weather forecast of partial to cloudy skies, i kid you not.

I just checked mine out. Theme 20 is a bit cloudy, but the rest are fine. My friend got the sets for me about four years ago. When doing a secure rip on the discs, only one of them needed multi-re-reads, but I don't remember which (too lazy to dig it out and look at the logs), but the disc was securely ripped without it taking an overly long time (less than 30min).

All discs were made by DADC Austria.

i think moni's right, i'm willing to bet that some overstock was found gathering dust in a distribution warehouse for virgin and some genius at the label said "let's just offer them out again since they've been out of print for a decade and a half and we'll jack up the price". what really sucks is that after these sell out and the poor souls that shell out a LOT of hard earned money for them, virgin will probably put out a singles box set that is remastered and have the rest of the tracks from this period that they left off. kind of like how elvis costello and bowie, for example, have had their catalogs reissued so many times or certain movies get reissued over and over on dvd with some new worthless extra to suck fans wallets dry.

I too have Themes 1 thru 4 and have some disc's that are very cloudy.
This is the first I'm hearing of this "CD Rot" thing and now I'm really pissed off. I haven't play those disc's in years because I have most of the songs in my computer, so I have no idea if there still playable but saving the set as a collectors item is now useless.
I've actually got one better....Back in the early 90's when CD Recorders first came out I purchased a Sony recorder and started the long arduous task of converting my cassette and vinyl collections to disc. Now some years later these Disc's are deteriorating with static in the songs, blank spots, or downright not playable. Talk about pissed! Several tapes and records were discarded after recording so now there lost forever. I had numerous WLIR concerts which I transfered to disc and are now Un-playable. Has anyone else experienced this problem and maybe have a solution?

Makes you wonder what kind of an idiot would buy these especially if they are not remastered. Now if only this had been released http://simpleminds.com/discography/?id=210 Why Wan Kerr objected to it being released i have no idea.

PAGSMUSIC, I have noticed that quality of recordable cds varies quite a bit. When I first purchased a cd recorder in 2000, I bought a bunch of Circuit City blank cds that have never had any problems. Since then, it's been buyer beware; various batches by other manufactures can have static, or sometimes just not play at all in certain players.

Moni, that withdrawn Simple Minds collection looked to be a near perfect compilation. I also wonder what they were thinking when they yanked it...

The simple reason why they didn't put that out is that they wouldn't be able to charge £100 for a redundant package like they're doing with the Themes set, which I'm sure is selling like hot cakes right now [:p]

Thank goodness I have the separate CD singles. No problem with cloudiness.

the link below is to a site that has some of them plus a bunch of other cool rare stuff:

http://symphonyofghosts.blogspot.com/se ... mple+minds

really hope that they eventually (probably a pipe dream at this point) do remastered cd singles box set(s) in mini-lp sleeves with all of the tracks from the various format...

Fuck the Themes sets howabout proper remaster deluxe versions of the LP's with the vaious mixes / b sides etc -

I have all Minds b sides and mixes etc - but would love a decent remaster of them all and the LP's - come on Kerr pull your finger out ya arse and jump on the U2/Duran remaster bandwagon.

And not give us fairly stupid high priced cd's that no fucker in their sane mind would wanna get anyway. 42 quid my arse.

The band have already put the block on two releases that were meant to be released in the last couple of years one being The Platinum Collection a 3 CD collection of their 12 inch mixes and the other being a deluxe version of New Gold Dream. They obviously aren't interested and those remasters from 2002 are the best we will get.
