Gay Myrick on Wounded Bird

You can always get Wounded releases about a month before the actual street date when you order directly from their site, and at a low price. I've had my Language CD for a while now. However, they do seem to have some state restrictions.

Yeah, they don't ship to any address in NY state. I believe this is because they are based in NY and don't want to get involved in having to collect sales tax.

ordered all three, and so far I received Living in a Movie and Language. Does anyone else find that the mastering on these discs is a little muffled? Both discs sound rather flat with no dynamics.

I think they sound reasonable, not great and not poor.

I am wondering if the flat sound is due to the fact that they've never appeared on cd before. I seem to recall reading that Wounded Bird pretty much transfers master tapes as they get them rather than spending a lot of time remastering. I'd like to think they used the best tapes available anyway.

I compared the sound to the CDRs that Myrick was selling, and the CDRs have a much more crisp and clear sound. Unfortunately, I think they were mastered from vinyl, because along with the better dynamics, you also get a lot of background noise most noticable during quiet moments in the songs.

Wounded Bird doesnt seem to do any remastering from the master tapes at all.. i am sure this sounds as bad as their other releases.. i expect this when buying from them. Has anyone ever asked them about it?

Totally agree with you on the sound Budaniel. What a big time bummer! I've been waiting for this cd to be released for years. When my mp3 version sounds better than the cd itself, that just really sucks. Getting really tired of bad remastering jobs. They also could have stuck some additional stuff in the liner notes. Yawn!

Thought they sounded pretty good myself - all of them. And no vinyl noise since they were not from vinyl. Guess my ears are old - I am very satisfied with these CD's.

This is the problem with all these labels. They're doing a GREAT thing in digging up these gems for a fairly small audience who still cares, BUT, they're making us settle for "pretty good". Remember back in the 80s when CDs were first introduced and we were blown away by the crisp clarity? The whole point of digital technology was much more than just not having any vinyl hiss. I have vinyl records that have better sound clarity than these CDs. The CDs don't sound terrible compared to some of the stuff we've been getting, but if the label really had the original masters for these albums, there is no excuse for below CD quality sound, IMO. When you've waited for years for something to come to CD and it finally gets what is probably its one shot at digital preservation, yet you still feel like you have to keep your vinyl because it sounds better, that's just sad.

Guess it is just a matter of how we hear the music. My hearing is not the best at age 46, I just think they sound nice for my tastes.

I do recognize there are music listeners that clearly hear differences and want a better quality recording. I would probably be the same way if I thought my hearing was good enough to even tell. I started losing some of mine at an early age and am not sure I'd know a remaster from a regular disc with my limitations. Just for these old ears, I'm happy to hear the music.

I hear ya...so to speak.

I don't know how my hearing hasn't gone yet. Remember the good old days of leaving a club or concert and your ears were ringing so bad that when you tried to go to sleep and placed your head on your pillow, the ringing got trapped between your ear and the pillow and kept you awake???
