...When Love Comes To Town, Angel Of Harlem..
Two really bad U2 songs. IMHO. This was the point at which I stopped paying attention.

I have to agree on "When Love Comes To Town"...lousy song (although I like "Angel Of Harlem"). The "Rattle And Hum" period is my least favorite U2 story-arc. For a while there they were getting perilously close to becoming Foreigner.
"Achtung Baby" is a masterpiece, by far their darkest and most intelligent reord, but every album after 1991 just has it's moments.

Like or hate U2, name another band that has aged so well over 25 years.
I like U2, but here are two that have held up better:

The Fall - started in 1976.
Sonic Youth - started in 1981.

Motors,
What?? No comprehensive review of Sonic Youth's new "experimental" album on their own SYR label? (still does'nt hold a candle to that live Psychic TV album I mentioned a few months back that nobody could help me out with.)

I like Sonic Youth but I couldn't tell what either of those bands have done of significance in the last 10 years.

Maybe I is jus' ignant.

The Fall's last 2 albums (The Real New Fall LP and Fall Heads Roll) have been excellent and rank right up there with their best material and although some of SY's Geffen stuff hasn't been great, it's still good with flashes of the old brilliance. For SY, you need to get the SYR ep's or listen to "Cocoa Neon Kamera Sutra" off the Kali Yug Express ep.

Are you talking about SYR 6 that came out last month? Or SYR 5, which wasn't even Sonic Youth (Kim only) but was still great? And which Psychic TV album? I never really got into them but if it's that great I'll have to check it out.

I guess bands like New Order and Depeche Mode don't count? Or are they too obvious? [|)]

Yeah but if nobody hears it does it matter? To be of significance it has to be recognized.

Otherwise it's like a tree falling in a lonely forest.

Part of what I'm talking about is consistency. Some of D Mode's later releases ("I Feel You"), Gahan's ill fated "Paper Monsters", don't hold up to their better work. And there have been hiatus periods, a long gap between releases even serious questions about whether the band would even continue. A lot of bands go through that stuff. Except, apparently U2. I'm glad Depeche has come shining through lately, though.

As for New Order, one of my favorite 80's bands, they are losing appeal quickly and it saddens me. Their stuff is becoming so lightweight it's almost embarrassing. "Crystal" was a good song but that was how many years ago? And "Krafty", with it's rhyme scheme straight out of the Bon Jovi school of writing simple songs, simply sucks. "Jetstream"? Puleeez! That whole "Waiting For The Siren's Call" album sounds like a Holiday Inn lounge act playing New Order. Who ever thought New Order would turn to playing happy pop muzak? Guess we'll have to turn elsewhere for our doses of dark edged, cathartic angst.

In the meantime U2 has remained as solid, prolific and passionate as ever.

Well, since the very meaning of the word "significant" is "having or expressing a meaning; meaningful" - they've certainly achieved artistic and critical significance. Now, do yourself a favor and actually LISTEN to these records.

Numan- 1 hit wonder.

Kraftwerk- 2 hit wonder.

Siouxsie- great run for about 15 years.

Bowie- great run ended in the mid 1980's. Name a song he did after that you could hold up to his better work. In fact, ask the average person on the street to name a song he did after that.
