The Selecter at Wolverhampton 23/11/06 with pic
Posted: Sat Dec 02, 2006 8:39 amAfter the disappointment of Hazel O' Connor, I reached the venue and went to the merchandise stand and was surprised to see who was selling it, Pauline Black herself!
After some small talk about where she's been on tour and hoping to get her EMI (nee Chrysilis) solo album released next year, I went to purchase a pink Selecter t-shirt but unfortunatly had sold out. She did promise to give me the setlist at the end.
As the band was tuning up, Kraftwerk's 'The Model' was being played and the bassist used this as his tune-up music! Then the concert started and I looked around and felt that Pauline deserved a
larger crowd than this. The set started with '3 Minute Hero'with most of the audience standing back. When the song had ended, Pauline rightly admonished them for not moving nearer the stage.
Suitably told off, the dancing started for the next track 'Everyday' and carried out throughtout an exhilirating set. My personal highlight from the set was the eponymously titled 'The Selecter'. Once
you found your dance groove for the track it felt so good to stay in it.
Pauline has great stage presence and was exhorting the crowd to sing along for the chorus and dancing throughout, it was a pleasure to see her enjoying it as much as us. The place erupted as soon as 'On My Radio' started and carried on into a hyper version of'2 Much Pressure' at the end of the main set.
When the encore started, a faster version of '3 Minute Hero' was played due to the poor reaction to the song when it opened the set. The set finshed on the joys of ganga to round up a fastastic set,
80 mins of pure Ska goodness.
After the show, I told the drummer that I really like his playing and he said he really liked my dancing! Pauline was sweet enough to sign the setlist ' To Peter, love and kisses Pauline Black' and dateed it

This has definately been the best gig I've seen a in a long time, look forward to the new tour next year Pauline!
