THE GOOD: A classic SoCal pairing of Plimsouls/Beat. Both bands were really 'on' last night and of course played pretty long sets of all the favorites. The house was packed and with a dominant representation of not just 30-somethings but of 40-somethings and 50-somethings. I haven't seen quite that old of a crowd in awhile, but I guess these bands brought everyone out of the woodwork. They even seemed to enjoy the opening band, A Kiss Can Be Deadly with the lead singer in a dead-on Pat Banatar outfit of black-n-white striped dress with a big red belt.
Everyone seemed to comment on how surprised they were about how many Plimsouls songs they actually knew but didn't realize it or forgot. Sure they finished with the "Now", "Zero Hour", "Million Miles" flourish, but people seemed really jazzed to hear "How Long Will It Take", "Lost Time", "Oldest Story", etc. They played 'em all fast and furious of course, which had quite a bit of the wall-to-wall crowd hoppin'.
Then Dave Wakeling comes on with a greeting (which no one can understand but cheer along anyway) and begins the love-in that seems to be the typical English Beat concert. He's just seems like a very happy man who exudes that positive fun-time energy with everything he does onstage. Their set got started a bit slow with more of the swaying Jamaican sounds rather than the hop-up-n-down 2-tone numbers. It was probably just more noticeable right after the full charge of Plimsouls. They picked up the pace significantly a third of the way through and again, finsihed with a flourish of their most popular numbers, even a couple General Public songs. "Mirror in the Bathroom" is still the huge crowd-pleaser, but just like last time I saw them, Dave's 'cover' of "Ranking Full Stop" really brought the house down. A great time.
THE BAD: The HOB sound - fucking awful! What a fucking barn that place is. It definitely took some edge out of the sets I thought, as enjoyable as they were. Putrid! Get a fucking clue you corporate wanks! Plus no cameras - I got no documentation, sorry. The weenie says "Well, we have a lot of trademarked items in there" - fuck off! I guess I've been spoiled seeing so many bands lately in intimate, offbeat venues. Also bad, that stereotypical pastiche of an opening band. Just because it's kinda retro doesn't mean it's good. Also also bad, no other west coast NWO representation (that I know of) - you guys are fucking weak out here! [}:)]
THE UGLY: Me and my buddies' Tequila-tasting session at Tortilla Joe's across the way. Amazing selection if anyone's nearby. Don Julio 1942s, Cuervo Reserva Familigia, and bunch of others I can't possibly remember now. Some amazing tastes, but it put on some pain this morning though. [:I]

Sorry about the lack of representation. I was ready to go until I read the post earlier this week about selling out!
I've been to over a dozen other Dave Wakeling concerts (General Public or The [English] Beat), and while most have been pretty full, I was caught off guard about selling out.
While I was sad to miss the show, a sell out means it would have been pretty hard to start skankin' on the dance floor with tht many people in the house!

I'm glad you had a great time Blir! Thanks for the review, too bad about the review, and the bullshit TM-ed load-of-crap they gave you... was it because of the dumb-ass shit they have hanging on the wall? Or some other b.s.???
No photos.[:(]
I was there in spirit with you guys, and even though I e-mailed some west coast members here at NWO, no one replyed to me, so very weak indeed, you guys get more NWO-ers on the east coast.[:0][B)]
Glad you enjoyed yourself, although paying for it Mr. Tequilla!!![xx(][|)][:o)]

I had the same idea/impression regarding the show not selling out as well as did Rotator, he said since Dave W. lived in La Jolla, I can see him anytime! Oh, well... glad it was a good gig![:p][:)]

They must have had a shitty sound man. I have seen Social Distortion, The Horrorpops and many others there and they all sounded great.
