songs that are like your fave song

www.pandora.com

This is an interesting concept: you log on to this site, enter the name of one of your favorite songs or bands, and the site will begin playing a succession of songs similar to your choice that it thinks you'll dig. It's both cool and a little scary.

The site was created by the Musical Genome Project, a group that anlyzes music by breaking it down into its fundamnetal elements. A staff of trained musicians has listened to some 500,000 tunes and noted their various characteristics, including "repetitive melodic phrasing", "subtle use of vocal harmony" and "minor key tonality", among numerous others. These traits are used to discover similarities between songs and to build playlists that are geared specifically toward your own taste. And--the site is free.
(above from American Profile.)

I just tried it. I typed in "Planet Earth", and so far it's played "Nightmares" by AFOS, "Shake it Up" by the Cars, and "Shock the Monkey". Excellent songs that seem to make sense. There's a feature you can click on that tells you why they pick the song they did, and it told me: "based on what you told us so far, we're playing this track because it features electronica influences, minor key tonality, electric guitar riffs, and many other similarities identified in the music genome project." The FAQ is very detailed wrt music theory.

Wonder what you guys think.[?]

Niiiice!!![8D]

I typed SoM's "Lucretia My Reflection" and it played "Dominion/Mother Russia" first, then "Äddiction" by Kill Switch, followed by "Summerland" (What Dreams may Come) by Fields of the Nephilim!

I am loving this! Great find, KYYX4ever! I will register shortly. [:I]

I typed in: Enjoy the Slience - Depeche Mode, then it played:
Blue Monday - New Order
Daphne Decends - Smashing Pumpkins
Warm - The New Cars
Fall in Love with Me - Japan
Twilight - Downtown
In My Dreams - Berlin

Pretty good selection, considering I'd only heard the first two songs of the seven played.

I typed in Kate Bush--Running Up That Hill, gave me a Kate Bush song to select ("Never Be Mine" was the first. I declined. "Suspended in Gaffa" is next).

Oh my. Way off the mark! Here's what I got:

1. Kate Bush--Suspended in Gaffa
2. Nicolette Larson--"Lotta Love" (Live)
3. Madonna--Bad Girl

I stopped right there. I can't believe a "Dreaming" song would lead me to Madonna. I wanted to avoid going further to a deeper circle in Hell until I reach the Britney Spears Ninth!

Tried again. This time just typed in the artist Ultravox:

1. Ultravox--Vienna
2. Tears For Fears--Mad World
3. Ultravox--Overlook
4. Summer in Berlin--Alphaville
5. Master and Servant--Depeche Mode
6. One of Our Submarines--Thomas Dolby
7. Souvenir--OMD
8. Terra Titanic (Lost at Sea)--Peter Schilling
9. Blasphemous Rumours--Depeche Mode
10. We Came to the Dance--Ultravox

Okay--note to self. When choosing artists that may transcend a traditional genre, you may run into trouble.

It's not very good - I typed in songs and it found those with a similiar name - "Danger Games" turned up with "angerous Minds and "Small Ads" with the Small Faces. All it does is search for terms similiar to those that were typed in.
