Classical Music Smackdown!!!

I dunno. Classical music after about 1750 kinda went downhill like popular music did after about 1983. Give me the baroque stuff anyday:

1. Arcangelo Correlli Concerti Grossi Op. 6, particularly no. 7, the "Christmas" concerto.

2. Handel - Concerti Grossi Op. 6

3. Bach - So many good ones to choose from, but I'll pick Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord, - sound great with a piano, too. I mostly like the slow movements.

OK, some post-baroque faves:

4. Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante in E flat (K. 364)

5. Beethoven - Symphony no. 5 "Pastoral"

Honorable mention: Nicolai Rimski-Korsakov- Sheherazade

1. Samuel Barber-String Quartet No. 1-Adagio for Strings. This can move me to tears just about everytime I listen to it.

2. Alfred Reed-Russian Christmas Music. Ok, Reed wasn't Mozart, but this is a beautiful piece. I first played it when I was a freshman in high school and I knew then that I wanted nothing more than to make music for the rest of my life.

3. Dmitry Shostakovich-Symphony No. 5-Finale. Another piece I played many years ago. Love it.

4. Camille Saint-Saens-Le Carrnaval des Animaux-"The Aquarium."

5. Gustav Holst-The Planets-Jupiter. Mars, too.

Honorable Mention--Anything by virtuoso trombonist Christian Lindberg. The guy is amazing.

Leave it to scramjet to correct us on classical versus baroque. [;)]. Wish I had that kind of mastery of musical styles.

Here is the second movement from the Gorecki symphony:

www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=d ... 04511F53E1

The words are as follows:

No, Mother, do not weep,
Most chaste Queen of Heaven
Support me always.
"Zdrowas Mario." ("Ave Marie" in Polish).

Gorecki took this from a prayer inscribed on the wall in the basement of a Gestapo jail in Poland, by an 18 year old girl . . . wish I knew her fate.

My taste in classical music leans towards the softer, mellower works, although I do enjoy an occasional rocker, like Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

Pachelebel - Canon in D (my absolute favorite-is there anything more beautiful?)
Bach - Air on a G String
Borodin - Polovtsian Dance no. 17 (Stranger In Paradise)
Beethoven - Piano Sonata no. 8
Bach - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
Williams - Fantasia (Greensleeves)
Handel - Water Music Suite no. 2
