Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. Also, Phantasm - another very scary low budget horror gem. Also agree with Randy on A Boy and His Dog and Hutter on Dawn of the Dead - what a stomach-turner! Recent remake wasn't bad either.

Thank you drsevrin. I'm shocked that Evil Dead or Army of Darkness wasn't the first movie listed in this thread. Those are the movies that come to mine immediately when I hear the phrase "cult classic."

My pleasure, Spectre General. With a moniker like yours (like it), you must love the Evil Dead series! [;)] Yes, I also would include Army of Darkness and Evil Dead 2. That pencil through the ankle . . . ouch [:0]

I've seen most of what you guys have listed. The exception is Billy the Kid and the Baise vampire, that I never heard of.

What makes a film a cult movie?

I like all those mentioned.
One that does come to mind is "Master of the Flying Guilotine"
It's been on HBO about 3 times this month and I can't not watch it.
I love the guy with the stretch arms.
Oh! and "Ssssssssssssssss" is pretty wild too!!

edit - If you really want to be freaked out don't watch the Japanese film "Odishon" ( Audition )

I haven't thought of "Ssssssssss" in a long time. I remember watching that as a kid. That movie freaked me out pretty good back then. I loved it.

Has anyone seen "May"? Fairly recent film, but it has all the makings of a cult classic: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/.

Also:

- "Party Girl" with Parker Posey
- "River's Edge"
- Certain Brian De Palma movies like "Carrie", "Raising Kain", and "Femme Fatale".
- "Shredder", which is this slasher/comedy thing that seems to show up on cable every two months.
- Certain David Mamet movies (The aforementioned "House of Games", "State and Main", "The Spanish Prisoner").
- "House of 1,000 Corpses"
- "Exorcist 3"
- Some of the others mentioned above: "Harold & Maude", "Evil Dead", etc.

Admittedly, some of these may be too mainstream to be considered cult, but I can't resist watching them when they're on.

"May" ROCKS! It's one of my favorite horror films of recent years. Lucky McKee's second film - "The Woods" - will be out DVD in October - I can't freakin' wait! I've heard he does a sort of homage to Argento's "Suspiria" with this one - very cool.
