Need another reason to hate rap music?

Well, here's three, possibly four reasons.

The entire "Miami Bass" genre would not exist if not for Kraftwerk. I'd love to give you some examples but I'm too damn tired.

No, but thanks anyway. [;)] When I was young our local zoo took a lion and a tiger and forced them to mate. The resulting offspring, a liger, died not long after birth. One can only hope.

Not all of it. In it's early years (1979-1983) it often kicked serious ass. But...(calling a spade a spade) it also plagarized serious ass. Funny that the two biggest rap hits of those early days were built on/stolen from disco (Rappers Delight) and electronic pop (Planet Rock). I wonder if Chic and Kraftwerk ever got any financial satisfaction.

I enjoy early rap now . . . more than I did then (a fellow librarian at work--she has "old school" music played all the time. And it sounds fresh, fun, and interesting--even some of the "naughty" stuff back then. As for rip offs--I think that always was a part of rap--I mean Rapper's Delite" sampled "Good Times," "Planet Rock" sampled Kraftwerk, and "White Lines" sampled "Cavern" by LiquidLiquid . . .

Though Vanilla Ice should've owned up to sampling "Under Pressure"--one hit wonder as he obviously was . . .

And remember it happens more often in rap but . . . Laura Branigan did something more deliberate with "Der Komissar" [:D] George Harrison was just one of the first (which twenty years later he may have not gotten dinged, for all I know. Though I believe Killing Joke and Nirvana had to do some out of court settlement once in the early 90's. . . )

I just saw the Tribe last weekend at the Berkeley Community Center. Nice blast from the past. Here is a list of hip hoppers that haven't bought into the ideas of bling/gangsta:

Anything from the Quannum label. Artists include Lateef the Truthspeaker, Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Lifesavas, Curumin, General Elektriks. Lateef has done a couple of Fatboy Slim's recent singles.

Crown City Rockers - These guys are all Berklee trained and use the Roots' formula of live instruments and an emcee. They even have a female keyboardist. Great live band.

DJ Shadow

Cut Chemist

Jurassic Five

Common - used to be extremely homophobic, but was able to evolve. I saw him freak out at a San Francisco concert when he saw two guys kissing. We later had a long discussion via email (a musician that answers his email, cool) talking about the social responsibility of rappers and their lyrics. One of his life-long friends subsequently came out of the closet and then died of AIDS. His friend completely changed Common's views on homosexuality and he has become one of the leading voices for tolerance within the hip hop community.

Mr. Lif

J-Live

Procussions

Mos Def

I can come up with 50 more if you want 'em. I think the perception problem with Hip Hop is that MTV, radio and the major record labels have completely altered the public perception of what hip hop is. They've so solidly focused on the amoral and superficial "artists", leaving the true innovators with no airplay, exposure, or ability ot market themselves. I've said it before but I'm really disappointed in my fellow new wavers/punks that are so quick to jump on the "hate rap" bandwagon. We were the kids that listened to the music that society didn't want us to. We were the ones that told the major labels to get a clue or fuck off. Most of the people I've encountered on this board, at least on this issue, seem to have turned into bland xeroxes of the same people that always condemned new wave and punk.

I agree, 100 percent. I love new wave for the same reason that I love GOOD hip hop. When done right, it can make you think, it can make you happy, it can make you admire the talents of the voices/musicians/deejays etc. Rewind a minute, and remember that new wave was assimilated and blanded down as soon as the mainstream took ahold of it, just like what happened to hip hop (except that gangstas and hoes were what was selling. Ho hum). If anything, hip hop is eerily similiar to punk rock (as far as the motivating factors). While folks on this board and others try to put all this music in nice lil' boxes, all I see is music...good, bad, or whatever. With all the headaches and roadblocks that the talented artists have to go through, I'm amazed that there is as much good music as there is.

Sorry for the rant, but music is my first true love.
