The Adventures - Once More with Feeling

The Adventures - Once More with Feeling

Postby drivel » Tue Jan 21, 2025 10:38 am

Brand new studio album released on 28th March 2025 from Belfast band The Adventures, their first in over 30 years!

Formed in Belfast in 1984, the band enjoyed several hits – including 1988’s Top 20 classic ‘Broken Land’ – and made four albums before disbanding in the mid-90s.

Featuring key original members Pat Gribben, Terry Sharpe and Eileen Gribben and including a songwriting collaboration between Pat and Cathy Dennis.

Pat Gribben explains the background to the new album: “We had been musing over the possibility of making another Adventures album for some time until covid and consequential lock down. I found myself spending more time in my little home studio and I could dedicate myself to a songwriting binge. ‘Hanging Tree’ was the first song I finished and this gave us the impetus we needed. Songwriting is all about running the rusty water out until the clear stuff flows. The album was written and largely recorded on my home computer set-up.

‘L. U. C. Y.’ is the first lead vocal by Eileen to appear on any Adventures album - a writing collaboration between Cathy Dennis and myself. All the vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitars were recorded here at my home studio. All the bass, electric guitars and live drums were recorded at Einstein Studios.”

what excellent news! Thank You.
I own the first 2 albums, which are very good, and I've just ordered the third.
I've missed the Cherry Red reissues, and it's a shame there isn't an extract from the new album, so I'm linking to some excellent memories of the band.

The Adventures - Broken Land (1988)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4vT2uaWf8w

2024 another time, another sound, but if the band has kept this sensibility and this quality of composition, it's promising.

On CD player:
The Hepburn "Thing of Joy " + "XI" 2025 - David Gilmour "Luck and Strange" 2024 - Trembling Blue Stars " Her Handwriting" 1996 - Legendary Pink Dots " Curse" 1983 - Disco Inferno "DI Go Pop" 1994

It's amazing how so many of my favorite songs/albums from the 80's did so poorly on the Top 40 charts. Theodore & Friends which was a great album never charted at all in the UK or in their homeland of Ireland. The four singles off it did poorly too. Another Silent Day (#71) Send My Heart (#62) Feel The Raindrops (#58) Two Rivers (#96) There was no US chart action on that album.

The second album did better even though personally I feel overall it was a weaker album. The Sea Of Love got to #30 in the UK and #144 in the US. The single Broken Land got to #20 in the UK and #95 in the US. The second single "Drowning in the Sea Of Love" almost cracked the UK top 40 (#44). Did nothing in the US.

This is ridiculous for such a great band. My other favorite albums from that period also charted poorly. The Lotus Eaters "No Sense Of Sin" only got to #96 on the album chart and spawned one top 40 single. The Pale Fountains "Pacific Street" only reached #85 on the album chart with one almost top 40 single "Thank You" (#48)

Still this new album sounds pretty good. It'll probably get to #423 on the album chart.
