Psychedelic Furs/Happy Mondays

I agree with that. If the Furs played with Echo and The Bunnymen like they did a few years ago that would make sense (and the Furs would open like last time).
In a perfect world, The Happy Mondays would be on a bill with The Charlatans or a reformed Stone Roses (although I doubt the Roses would reunite as long as Ian Brown still sells records in the U.K. and the Charlatans would need to put older songs back into their set). Even if they toured with an older act like APB that would make some stylistic sense (both bands being 70's funk rave-up fans). Then again, I have to stop myself from thinking like it's 1992. The promoters were putting together a "nostalgia package". Maybe in that context it works and the average concertgoer just hears two bands from the 80's and has a great time. Who knows? Seems 50/50 based on reviews I've read. Considering it's 2009, I guess we should be grateful that these bands even tour at all.

Agreed. The billing may indeed have been slightly odd, but I enjoyed the Mondays just fine all the same. I think many of us who enjoyed the Furs in our late teens and/or early twenties certainly plugged into the Madchester acts in 89 and 90. I know I did. Acts that seem disparate 20 years ago now don't seem so far apart. Living in San Francisco in 89-91, those acts were rightly, IMO, ruling the "modern rock" airwaves on Live 105 and such. The Farm at the I-Beam was priceless. I only wish I'd had the chance to see Stone Roses, Jesus Jones, Blur, the Neds, Carter USM, etc. But, on a note of poetic irony, Tbone and I did recently see Charlatans UK in the same venue the Furs and Mondays played, and enjoyed them immensely. No complaints here.

I look back on The Furs/Monday's show, and while I have nothing bad to say about The Furs, the same can't be said about Happy Monday. Ryder, with his hand in his pocket the entire set, and utter lack of interest or enthusiasm, was not there. While I like the Mondays....to a degree....I think they tend to be far overrated for that particular "era" of music. drsevrin, Charlatan's UK were fantastic, and really put HM to shame. Ryder really should have been embarassed, but I doubt he remembers the night with any clarity.

He was EXACTLY the same way here in Vegas too. Hand in pocket, and totally uninterested, it really turned me off from them, as i thought he was just going through the motions(and couldnt wait for the show to be over with). At least, thats how I perceived it as.

Atlanta Show

The Happy Mondays are the worst musical experience of my entire life. It looked like someone's way uncool and bloated dad decided to jump up on stage and show those youngsters "Just how we get the party started! Yeah! Come on, Atlanta, Georgia!!! C'mon c'mon c'mon!!! Yeah! Let's rock this place!!! C'mon!!!!" I truly expected to hear that Good Vibrations song... These guys reminded me of why I began to and still do hate commercial FM radio. Thank God for beer because I needed one after that disaster.

The P. Furs were excellent. The sax player was awesome. The sound was a bit heavier than I remember and that was fine by me. There was a large crowd there, too. Everyone was way into the show. Great set list also.

On my way to the venue, some lady with three children, yes, children, asked me if I was going to the show. I said yes and she handed me a ticket. "Just keep it," she said. Thanks, lady!

Anaheim show was awesome. It was great to see the Mondays. It was nice to see the Furs in a smaller venue - seen 'em twice at the Pac Amp.

Happy Mondays must have saved their best for Toronto. They were fantastic. And yeah, Shaun Ryder stood with his hand in his pocket, but that's not different than any other concert footage you see of him. No Bez and no Rowetta, but Julie, who replaced her, more than filled her shoes.


The Furs sounded great. But, call me old, I'd have liked to hear a bit more of their older stuff. I guess you can call me a girl, Richard Butler just gets better looking with age[:)]

Marv what are ya talking about? (The furs were the shyte and, had great song structure/progression, played tight, and had Richard Butler's searing vocals. I liked them much more than the Mondays)!
