Nirvana gave birth to grunge (1987)
Never (nah, pretty sure it died at some point)

Actually, Nirvana killed an even bigger foe: heavy metal. It seems the way of popular music(from like '80 or so) started at new wave, moved to heavy metal, and then went onto grunge, w/ Nirvana.

Actualy New Wave did not end that early.It wasn't until the Grunge movement replaced the New Wave movement,and by 1991 I would say that was the year that New Wave died,at least bigtime it did.And what I mean by that is,that there was still some new bands

what's your take everyone though on the emergence of rem and the move towards "jangle rock" which is more or less the forefather of 90's alternative rock? people usually point to their ascension as a turning point.

I agree Grunge killed everything & nothing good came out of it. New wave was officially dead when Kurt Cobain screamed that 'smells like teen ass' song. MY guilty pleasure now is going into all the used CD shops & seeing piles & piles of crap grunge CDs s

For Me The 90's marked the Turning Point.
I would say that the NY/NJ "New Wave" Club Scene / music started to change in '87/88 or so, but there was still "good" music that lingered on thru the next couple of years.

I don't know. I really think it stopped being a definitive "movement" around the mid-80s timeframe. After that, the number of artists and hits trailed off tremendously. There were certainly new wave musicians and alterno folks around during the late 80s,

This is kind of a loaded question, really....I think 'new wave' had a beginning and end, but it never really jumped the shark. I mean, the phrase 'jumped the shark' suggests that it became a parody of itself, over-the-top, stupid.

Ditto re grunge. It carried me through the early 90s along with electronic - kinda weird combo but not for someone who loved Heaven 17 right next to Sex Pistols. What were you listening to in the 90s if not some good hard alt rock? Post-grunge, rap-metal.

I think New Wave jumped the Shark when Billy Joel, Linda Ronstadt, and Alice Cooper tried to put out New Wave albums. (Glass Houses, Mad Love, and Flush the Fashion, respectively).

Grunge killed everythign, by the way. Now, the airwaves are innundate
