Top Bands, Top Albums - The Cure

Postby Frau_Blucher » Fri May 12, 2006 12:11 am

You choice and your comments as to why?

If there's more than 8 albums, I've chosen the first 8 (unless there's obvious crap in favor of some later stuff). I'll compile all the results for all the bands in one place.

I played all of these a lot, but Disintegration, like Black Celebration for dM, is, I think, the pinnacle of their work -- everything hit for the whole album.

Where is the Top? I know alot of people really like that era of the Cure. It is the one album I always go back to... after I get tired of Porno and Head on the Door.

There are way too many of these to post comments in every one. I pick Kiss Me x 3.

I'll choose KM3 from your list. I think it's a great album even though I know lots of people criticize it for being all over the place, as opposed to Disintegration, on which all the songs seem to fit together and most people claim as their favorite. (My very favorite Cure album is Wish, which also was criticized for being all over the place. Maybe I'm schizo!). KM3 would get my vote even if I hated most of the songs. It has the more perfect pop song ever created on there--Just Like Heaven--and that song is worth paying for the whole album.

Besides JLH, there are lots of other stand outs on KM3. In fact the only song I really don't care for is Fight. The rest capture the different sides of the Cure--fun pop (JLH), darkness (The Kiss & Shiver and Shake), silliness (WCIBY), and everything in between.

Although not a choice presented, and a greatest hits compilation, I have to say Staring at the Sea.

Definitely "Pornography", though "The Top" is a close runner up. A great album made when the band was basically coming apart at the seams. The opening line "it doesn't matter if we all die" sums it up perfectly. The beginning of their greatest e period 1982-1985.

The Top and Japanese Whispers for me, too. But from this list, Disintegration is my fave. I can listen to that from beginning to end and love each song more and more. It was later-era Cure, but really encapsulated their sound and atmosphere.

Somewhere in between Pornography-Disintegration-Faith.
Those three albums are seriously incredible.

I went with 'Head on the Door'; While I like the downcast feel of earlier records like '17 Seconds', I think they kind of hit a stride when they embraced dance/pop. 'Japanese Whispers' has that aura to me, as well.

Every Cure album from Three Imaginary Boys till Wish has sth special to me.
Three Imaginary Boys is raw, Seventeen Seconds and Faith are deep and obscure. Pornography is like a mix of turbulent emotions. Japanese Whispers makes you wanna dance really bad. The Top has a weird vibe...kind of pyschedelic but at the same time it's all Cure. The Head On The Door is cleverly ecclectical. Kiss mr too but in a different way. Disintegration is so deep, emotional and melancholic. And Wish.. has that magical sound that is so purely beautiful.
Amen... done with praising Robert's abilities.

All time favourite is Wish. Please don't make me choose just one as a favourite.
