Greatest Bass Player

These guys were all virtuosos in a genre not well considered for it's musical proficiency. Who's your choice?

Peter Hook will get the most votes, but I think the best 3 are Maby, Flea and Mike Watt. I voted for Watt.

You forgot to include Mark King of Level 42, now there's an excellent bassist! [8D]

I voted for Dave Allen, but my own personal preference is Mick Karn.

What's Tina Weymouth doing on the list?!

Or Les Claypool. Or John Taylor. Or Tony Butler. or Mark Lickley.

Or Tony Levin. Or Nick Beggs. Or...

And BTW, where's the love for a bass player's musical talents? Getting the basics down maybe easier for the bass than for other intstruments, but the leap from OK to Great takes a lot of hard work and talent, just like any other instrument. I've said it before and I'll say it again: In every band I was ever in a good bass player was worth his/her weight in platinum.

I refuse to vote on the grounds that Mick Karn, Jaco Pastourious, Percy Jones and Tony Levin were not included....thennnnnnn none of those others would make a list.you only need them. Don't forget Paul McCartney has contributed some amazing work over the years.

Went with Hookey but Tina is a good bass player, Flea is an excellent bass player and Sting was very good during The Police times.

But.... no "all of the above" option.

And yes Mark King is also good.

Hey, I've just realised: no Severin as an option???? He's an excellent bass player. I hope Siouxsie and the banshees get back together one of these days. [:)]

Maybe its' just me but I didn't think Paul Siminon was ever known for his bass playing abilities. He made it very well known that he had no idea how to play when he joined The Clash, retelling the story of putting the stickers on the fretboard numerous times.

I tried with this poll to keep it within the parameters of the Punk/New Wave era. Obviously with any poll (especially limited to 15 choices) there would be controversial omissions (Mick Karn being the most egregious) However, I do feel that Tony Levin, Paul McCartney & Jaco Pastorius belong in a whole other column entirely. Being a bass player myself, I made my choices based on who has influenced me the most (I voted for Maby) balanced with those who are highly regarded in the industry.

There are some choices that I would like to defend outright: The inclusion of Tina Weymouth was essential to me as Talking Heads had one of the tightest rhythm sections in all of rock and were very instrumental at merging african dance music with edgy new wave. By no means marginal.

Paul Simenon (like Jeremy Kerr) developed quickly as a fine and melodic bass player. How can anyone ignore the signature riffs that color LONDON CALLING from beginning to end. When you hum a tune from that album, chances are high you're humming the bassline. He became (in my mind) a worthy successor to John Entwistle in that regard.

Another musician who hardly ever gets credit is John Doe of X. His playing (especially live)approaches McCartney-like invention. He's all over that thing, all the while singing mind you. Not an easy feat.

There, that's my say
