I'm going to go with Paul Weller, the arrogant sod that he is.

Vince-less Depeche Mode .:. Boring, dull, overated.

Sex Pistols .:. Whaa? Cook and Jones were the only thing they had going and they got rid of them. I dropped my guitar once and I swear it played "God Save the Queen" when it hit the floor.

Kurt Cobain .:. A load of rubbish. "Kurt was the greatest..." What a load of rubbish. He had a mental/drug problem. End of story.

Squeeze .:. Recycled pub rock for the "kids".

ABC .:. Disco. "Shoot That Poison Arrow..." Please.

Almost anything Kim Fowley was ever associated with except for Dane Conover.

The music you listen to is the soundtrack of your life.

Using "overplayed" as a measure, these bands were most overrated in my memory:

Dead Or Alive

Bananarama

Duran Duran

Thompson Twins

Men At Work

Whew!!! A bit hard to take some of the above!!! I will have to think about 'legends' of new wave. There aren't really many of them. really! That is, who are regarded as 'legends'???

Joy Division...I reckon that if a band can produce even one genuinely iconic song, then they have justified their existence! (Love Will Tear Us Apart!!!)

They have earned their place in many record collections and collective memories just for that!

The Beatles??? I can't understand how anyone could say 'overrated' and 'Beatles' in the same sentence unless the word 'not' is between those words!!![?] They (with George Martin) virtually invented modern 'pop' music! But they are hardly 'new wave'???

REM...Ahhh well! Maybe because I met Michael Stipe in a club after seeing REM in concert earlier in the evening(and loved it...er, the concert that is [:D]) )...I found him to be a nice guy so it is hard to agree in the negative! Though they got a bit MOR in recent years!

Sonic Youth!!!??? Now, I might be a bit controversial here and suggest that anyone who thinks that Sonic Youth are overrated just doesn't get it (them). Sonic Youth produce what I call cathartic sonic impressionism...I love them!!! What they do makes perfect sense to me!

I agree with most of the rest...but as an Aussie, when it comes to Men At Work, I am not sure whether to be embarrased or attempt a lame defense of our musical version of Vegemite! [:o)]

Cheers!
Originally posted by Frank_ChickensGary Numan - What is all the fuss about? His last big hit was written by Bill Sharpe from Shakatak and that was over 20 years ago. Dark, gloomy drone that his sheep, sorry, "Numanoids" lap up. Very astute person, proving that there's one born every minute epsecially considering how well his off-cuts collection "Living Ornaments" sold here.
You're wlecome to your opinion, no matter how very wrong it may be, but at least get your facts straight. Numan had a hit in 2003 with "Crazier" which peaked at #13. "Cars" also has been a hit again in both 1987 and 1996 (#16 an #17, respectively). "Change Your Mind", the Bill Sharpe tune I imagine you were referring to, only went as high as #17 itself.

And how exactly is Numan OVERrated? He's been getting slagged off by the press and anyone who isn't a fan for most of the 27 years of his career. Only recently has he received recognition by other artists he's influenced, and rightly so. This is a true artist that writes, produces, performs and records his own material. One of the last surviving '80s acts that didn't abandon the synthesized music when it fell out of fashion. And the man can write melodies like nobody's business. One of the all time greats in that department.

And I'm not sure what "off-cuts" means, but Living Ornaments is a live album.

I wouldn't exactly call a song that only spent three weeks in a chart a hit, more of a blip and if you have to rely on remixes for hits it doesn't exactly say a lot for the original material. In any case the chart life of a Numan single is predictable, his fans buy it the first week it came out and then the rest of them get it second week and it's out of the charts shortly after that.

He may be able to write melodies, shame most of them aren't memorable or we would have heard more about them since the mid '80s. And by off-cuts I mean material which normally wouldn't be released except that it's the middle of a boon period and the suckers will buy anything.

Oh, and Ian Dury & the Blockheads. I never liked that "Hit me with your rhythm stick" song. Maybe if it was an instrumental, I just didn't like his vox.

Underrated could be Aztec Camera... they seemed to always be under the radar but had a knack for making some great songs!

Overrated would be the manufactured talentless karaoke singers that clog the charts that sell millions and millions of albums and grace the cover of the music rags week after week. Sorry, but if your argument is that a musician must not be good because he isn't a big hit amongst the masses, you'll never convince me. Popularity != quality.

As for Numan's melodies not being memorable, I remember them all. [:p]

I didn't say his hits were blips did I, just that one, though uit could be said about everything since "Change Your Mind". And why did the resulting album take so long to release? Nice way to finish off any momentum.

No, my arguement is that despite the many plaudits he's received over the years, his music is still a dark gloomy drone that only appeal to the sheep, sorry, Numanoids and no-one else. His chart record does semm to back that up.

Of course you remember all his melodies, the drones, sorry, Numanoids would. Shame very few other people do. [:D] [;)]

I have to go with AC/DC as being over rated. Sure I like some of there stuff , Hells Bells being one of them but for the most part it all sounds the same , all three chords of it.
