Love My Way: A tale of two versions

Postby LovePlusOne » Wed Jun 07, 2006 6:56 am

So I had iTunes going the other night in the background on shuffle as usual. Suddenly "Love My Way" by the Furs, one of my favorite NW tunes, kicks in. Except it was different. I can't really explain in detail, but the production seemed a bit unpolished, like it was a demo or early take. The version I was hearing was from the "Valley Girl" soundtrack, I immediately went to the other two places I have the song ripped off of, the "Wedding Singer" soundtrack and "Forever Now." Both were the more familiar version, the one I remember in the video, the one you are likely to hear on an 80's flashback radio program.

So what's the deal with the "Valley Girl" version? Was this a promotional version or did Rhino screw up when they compiled the soundtrack a few years ago?

It's the normal version (3:40) on my Valley Girl CD (Rhino 1994).

Well they did two versions of "Pretty in Pink," maybe there are two versions of "Love My Way."

There are definitely two different mixes of the song. There's the one that everyone is familiar with, and then there's one that sounds like certain sounds are off in the distance, or it's being played in a large, empty room. I have that version on one of my CD's somewhere. I much prefer the standard version.

oh man, mysteries abound. Is it possible Rhino released two mixes of the CD off of different masters?

Ooh, I love "Love My Way". I'd like to hear the other versions...

Speaking of the Psychedelic Furs, what other songs do you guys recommend? I can't get enough of "Heaven" (and how many times does the dude spin in that video?).

There are probably other threads out there on 'em, but some that I think are solid:

Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink, Into You Like a Train (Ok, pretty much all of "Talk Talk Talk"), President Gas, the aforementioned Love My Way, and No Easy Street. I'm not so much a big fan of post "Forever Now" save a couple standouts. But I think if you start with those two albums you can't go wrong.

In terms of PFurs recommendations, I'd agree with Love Plus One EXCEPT that I'd add Mirror Moves as a favorite. Beyond me why it's not yet remastered.

Do you have the actual Valley Girls CD? If not, maybe the MP3 you have is a PoS rip/encode.

I remember reading an interview where Richard Butler admitted that their remake of "Pretty In Pink" just didn't capture the spirit of the original. Apparently one of the guitars was slightly out of tune on the orig. version, giving it a bit of an edge.

PS Richard Butler's new album has some great stuff on it.

I have the actual CD put out by Rhino of the VG soundtrack.

Definitely the same version of Love My Way that I grew up knowing and loving (ie the version on Forever Now). I'm not familiar with the other version you mentioned...

Hot Tracks remixed Love My Way and gave it an ambient sound. Is this what you're hearing? If you're interested I can send you a copy of it. It's actually a pretty decent mix.

The echoey version of the song is on Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The 80's, Volume 9. I'm listening to it right now. It's definitely different. Other than some of the sounds being pushed deeper in the mix, the backing vocals on the chorus are brought up a good bit.

Yes I do actually. I bought it about 5 years ago. Definitely more of a "washy" mix than the "canon" version.
