I know, Wolv; I think about that too. Part of what made our music so special was the great lengths involved in getting it. (for some of us, anyway. I moved to Alaska in the middle of my Senior year, as well as attending college up there, and there were maybe 5 cool albums in the whole state. And 4 of them were mine ![:D]).
Seriously, though, I couldn't imagine having had slsk or other P2P sites, other digital sharing, or even this site back in the day. Everything would be soooo different.

Anyway, I don't have any vinyl stories. But I enjoy reading y'alls. I did not have a record player, and could never afford buying a lot of music anyway. Purchasing a cassette was a MAJOR endeavor, something to be treasured for a long, long time. I had no money, was a thrift-store queen, and learned pretty quickly which nights the clubs charged a cover so I wouldn't have to pay. It's not that I thought the clubs shouldn't make any money, or charge; I simply had no money.
The only vinyl I ever really got was when I absolutely could never find it on cassette. I only ended up with about 2 dozen records over the years.
I'm more nostalgic about my cassettes, even tho the sound quality doesn't even begin to approach that of vinyl. And no, I no longer play them either. Just lug them around everytime we move[8].

I've got the opposite of the "lost the collection to the ex" story. My girlfriend of 2.5 years and I split up but still lived together due to $$$. When she and her new beau(yep, she dumped me for some other guy and he was spending the night almost every night. It SUCKED!!!) finally moved out they moved all the way across the hall into the other basement apartment. One night there was a huge rainstorm, and when I returned home there was my ex and her boyfriend in my apartment franticlally getting all my vinyl up off the floor. I didn't know what to think, but they saved the vinyl. I only lost 2 pieces in that flood thanks to thier quick thinking and ability to not hold a grudge.

Other than that I've kept some vinyl, sold ALOT of it off over the course of 25 years, but still have about 2500 12" and Lps, and about 1000 7", 90% of which is punk and new wave (and all the offshoots thereof).

I replaced all the vinyl I had with cds (in the early-mid 90's to about 2000) or mp3s (after 2000) and got rid of my records years ago (gave them away if I recall).

To manage the size of our cd collection (about 600), a few years ago we traded a bunch of cd's (after ripping the songs we want to keep to mp3) to Bookmans (used books, cds, records, tapes, dvd, etc...) here in town to get new music that we want (rip them and trade them again).

I probably had less than 200 LPs and once I had the songs I wanted, I'm not tied to the physical product. I prefer the immediate ability to find any song I want to listen to within 10 seconds. Currently have 3800+ mp3s in my itunes library.

I know we've been through it before, but personally I'm happy that it wasn't around. I appreciated the one album I could buy every month a lot more than easily downloaded music today.

I also appreciate discovering all these "new" old groups/songs, etc. so much more now.

I'm gonna let you on into a secret: I didn't get into the early 80s until around the early-mid 90s.

I bought a lot of compilations, big artists best albums (Dare, Luxury Gap etc.) but within a few years I got bored, just in time for..

NAPSTER!!

Wow, what an effect that had on me. With a lot of help from Smash Hits, I was getting everthing I took my fancy. Europeans? Here you go. Small Ads? Not a problem. Alternative Radio? Which track do you want?

This, along with Torchomatic, told me to ignore the mainstream and explore the more forgotten corners of the 80s, a place where I'm still at today.

Been seriously collecting since 1979 and have amassed aproximately 4000 LP's, a coupla hundred 12" and I'm looking at about 500 cd's and maybe 500 cassettes.

Started transferring vinyl 6 years ago (when I started my Live365 station which is still running mind you) and have 9408 mp3's done which is about 900 lp's (give or take a hundred).

I got divorced in 94 or was it 96? Don't remember and frankly I don't want to remember. My ex took me to court to try and get at least half of my collection but the Judge denied it because I could prove that the majority of the LP's were bought before I met her.

I have none in storage....all are alphabetized and racked in my music room. I still buy vinyl....as a matter of fact, I bought 3 12" Flock of Seagulls, Dirk Wears White Socks (Adam and the Ants) and a 12" of Peter Murphy today for 10 bucks. All in in very good condition. There's a flea market nearby that I hit every Saturday morning. "Bob" sets aside all of the "weird" stuff (his terminology) for me so I get first dibs...have got a ton of new wave and Krautrock from him for the last 3 years.

My collection is about 70% new wave (all ofshoots) 20% Krautrock (prog, electronic....) and 5% newer stuff. I wouldn't part with any of it. I'd ditch a relationship if I had to choose between the two. My music brings me comfort more than any relationship I ever had.

You can call my jaded....just don't call me late for supper.

Max

Because I own everything I had on vinyl digital now, I had to give them all away 3 months ago when I moved. I put a big card board box in the lobby of my building and wrote "free vinyls - old and rare new wave". The box was gone within minutes, someone took everything. The only items I saved were X-ray spex album "germfree adolescents" and blondie's first japanese 45 single X-offender.

I've moved 8 times in my life, spent the better part of a year living in my car (while my earthly posessions got better accomodations in storage), and you know where they went? Nowhere! 99% or more of the ones I've had since 1981 are still here with me. Luckily, no fires, floods or burglary -- unless you count a few things buddies probably borrowed and forgot to return -- and I only ever part with duplicates (and with some bands, not even then), so no "garage sale remorse."

No way I can ever give an accurate figure of the exact totals unless I want to hire people to count them, but adding up the number of 12" vinyl sleeves that'll fit on Ikea's $99 bookshelves and the number that will fit in milk crates and U-Haul's small box, by my estimations, there are at least 29,000 LPs and 12" singles. And, no, hardly any of it is alphabetized (several thousand are up in the attic in sealed boxes). So if I tell you I have to look for something, well, I have to _really_ look for it. The 7" singles I have a better handle on. There's about 15,000-20,000 of those.

I guess for a guy who's never took home more than 40 grand in any given year, never owned his own home, and gives himself an "entertainment budget" of no more than a hundred a week, acquiring all this crap in the first place was some feat. Not like it's ever enough...

Speaking of which, anybody's harpie wife making them part with their record collection? [:D]

I, like many others here, still have every new wave album I ever bought. I've probably moved 12-13 times since 1983 and I watch those albums like a hawk. I keep 2 huge boxes (maybe 300 albums total) in my bedroom closet and they're staying with me until I die. Period.

I still store mine in milk crates, the wonder box! At bed, bath and beyond recently, i discovered album display frames. so, now i get to use them as art work around the house.

Love the rooms, guys. I'd post my own pics, but I'm not much of an interior decorator. I feel I've done my part just to have furniture.
