Attention KROQ '80s listeners

Postby Spaz » Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:09 am

Hi fellow KROQ (L.A.) travellers...

Back in the '80s, KROQ was the bomb, and the place to go for if you wanted to experience the sounds of 'new music'. Those days are long gone, obviously, but the memories still linger on....

I've compiled 13 volumes of Songs That KROQ Forgot and I'm beginning to put together volume 14.

These CDs consist of songs that KROQ used to play the hell out of but are largely forgotten today and seldom show up on New Wave compilations or during Flashback weekends.

What songs do YOU remember from the days of KROQ that you never hear anything about anymore?

Don't worry about listing songs that may be on the other volumes...I want to hear about what YOU remember from the good ol' days. You can either own it or not own it...this is just a list right now and will help me gather songs for this next volume.

Remember I'm not looking for the BIG songs by artists, I'm looking for the ones that were played to death for a month or so then dropped off the radar....they could be by the BIG bands but should be the lesser hits...

Here are some more examples that I've already used on the previous volumes, but this may give you an idea of what I'm looking for (and I'm definitely going to use a few that have been mentioned already!):

PAT WILSON-Bop Girl
HOWARD DEVOTO-Rainy Season
ADAM ANT-Baby Let Me Scream At You

As I said, a few of the bands are some of the more well-known bands but the songs are not their big hits. Others have been forgotten almost altogether (apart from places like NWO, of course!)

These were late 70's/early 80's but they do fit your description.

Penetrators - Boys Night Out
Jamie Sheriff - My Car
Hall and Oates - No Brain No Pain, Intravino, BeBop Drop
Tonio K - Funky Western Civilization
Ian Lloyd - Slip Away
Jules and the Polar Bears - Good Reason
Klondike Karl - Time Is A Tickytock
Romeo Void - Talk Dirty To Me
Tommy Tutone - Cheap Date
Surf Punks - Teenage Girls
Nick Lowe - Big Kick Plain Scrap
Rachel Sweet - Who Does Lisa Like?

And not new wave but they played the hell out of-

Yes - Does It Really Happen?
Beatles - Honey Pie (April Whitney was the only who played this)

Not all great songs but they do bring back a lot of memories for me. Many of the others I'd list have been mentioned, and provided by, Blir.

God, the old KROQ was a great station. I'm from New York, but whenever I was in LA, it was one of the first things I looked forward to when renting a car at LAX.

When I went to LA in 2002, and tuned in and heard the EXACT SAME CRAPPY STATION (Creed, Nickelback, Staind etc.)as K-Rock in New York, I almost puked. Infinity/Clear Channel have really killed FM radio.

At least I found out about "Joneseys Jukebox" last time in LA, as I was looking for something other than KROQ to listen to. I'm still streaming Indie 103 on the Internet to catch Steve Jones' show today.

A lot of really obscure KROQ songs weren't officially on the playlist but were joq choices at :55. April liked to play the Humming Song by Martin Mull. Larry Woodside was fond of closing his show with Larry Move Your Hand by Penguin Feet and the Teardrop Kid.

Hey Spaz,
Check out my lists in this thread. Songs are from 79-82, the "golden age" as far as I'm concerned.
