Songs heard on the radio...today?!

Postby Frau_Blucher » Wed Jul 12, 2006 3:12 am

I don't know why, but there's something special about hearing new wave on the radio. It just comes on, not put there by yourself on CD or MP3, but there on the airwaves, for all to hear! Amazing. It's like a reminder theres some semblance of sanity and taste in the world.

Like just now while running some lunch errands, I popped on WLIR 107.1 out of Long Island and viola, Freur's Doot Doot and The Jam's Bitterest Pill was played back-to-back. Wow! I was totally stoked. It made me really incredibly happy. I don't really know why...I play such songs all the time off my Pod. It's just freakin' cool hearing it on the radio.

Weird? Ditto? Any recent great tracks you've heard on the actual radio?

Usually if I hear one on the radio, it's an obvious choice like 'I Ran' or 'Whip It'. But the other day in a department store I head "See Those Eyes" by Altered Images (of all things) and I felt that same sense of exhiliration you described. Interestingly enough, the song selection went right back to "current hits o' today". It's as if some kind of cosmic glitch caused that song to come on.

I can listen to this stuff self-selected all day but when you hear it by chance, out of the blue, it really makes you feel vindicated.

I usually listen to XM, but...

A couple of weeks ago in a mall deparment store, the overhead music was Level 42's "Leaving Me Now", followed by OMD's "Joan of Arc". I just smiled through the rest of my trip there. Like your experience bpdp, after those two songs the next selection was Celine Dion--giving me a acute case of musical whiplash.[:D]

I agree, when a song that isn't common NW comes from anywhere by my stereo/mp3 player it's always a pleasent surprise.

I know what you mean, Blir, and I don't blame you. Or any of us. It's like some serendipitous ball (there's that word again) slung at us when we do not expect it.

I don't listen to the radio any longer, but if I am at a store, a club, or some public place, and some unexpected NW song comes on, it always brings a smile to my face.[:)]

I was at a car dealer's last summer & they played quite a few songs in a row that weren't quite "big" hits, like General Public, etc. along with a few more popular things like Billy Idol & Elvis Costello. It was a rush to hear them out in public & made me wonder who was programming thier music.

I could have heard any of those songs at home, but I hung around to hear what was next. I especially liked that a couple people were humming along - serendipitous ball slinging indeed!

I was in a Krispy Kreme about a month ago and I heard "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division...followed by "The Macarena." Now that was certainly jarring to hear!

I listen to Sirius for my daily fix of new wave on the radio (Channel 22 - 1st Wave). They play some obscure stuff on Fred Schneider's Friday night shows, and on the Sunday "Dark Wave" show. Also, the indie rock channel (#26, Left Of Center) pulls out a gem or two regularly. They played "Numbers" by Kraftwerk the other day which made me very happy.

A great topic!

I rarely listen to the radio, because there isn't any good station in the town where I live. I cannot even remember the last time I heard a new wave song, and if, it was probably a commercial one.
It's a better experience, hearing the new wave song you like on the radio, rather than putting it youself on the computer or mp3 player.

Great topic Blir, I definately know what you mean.

I don't listen to radio much anymore, but I was really stoked to hear U2's "I Will Follow" as a promo on the TV coverage of the World Cup. Heh heh, cool.

I remember Placebo's "Infra red" which gets played pretty often at Kabul 107.9.

And I so love that song. [;)]

I was thrilled to death when I heard "Walk out to winter" By Aztec camera and I was soooooo happy on 107.1 which is "the peak" I think its in White Plains NY and its hard to get on Long Island in certain spots

Also I heard the Style Counsil in a store recently and I had to wait until it was over before I left :)

Speaking of the Council, I heard Paul Weller's "Above The Clouds" in a Jack-In-The-Box recently. Weird.

LIR played a cool live version of "Girls on Film" this afternoon. I thought that was a pretty nice twist. After the novelty of hearing new wave on radio again, I'm starting to realize that they stick to pretty common and often nauseating stuff. This was a good surprise though.

I rarely listen to radio nowadays but I can fully relate with what y'all said. I don't know if it's just me but hearing a new wave song on radio makes it more "alive" somehow than hearing the same thing on your cd player or whatnot. And it makes me feel warm all over when I see other people humming along or becoming more attentive because they like what they're hearing. Unfortunately, that rarely happens.
