Fun documentary on New Wave/Squeeze artist on DVD

Postby amyglennmovie » Wed Jul 05, 2006 3:07 am

Hello Wavers
My name is Amy and I just found out about new wave outpost. I hope you don't think my post to be 'spammy' but I wanted to let you guys know about the indie documentary that I directed on the former lead singer of Squeeze called "Glenn Tilbrook: One For The Road". I got to join Glenn (my musical hero) on the road on his first solo, acoustic tour of America in 2001 and I documented what it's like for an established artist from the 80's(who once sold out Madison Square Gardens)to adjust to his new independent surroundings....in a rickety 1988 mobile home! Rather than staying at Ritz hotels, we stayed at KOA campgrounds and state parks. The doc is a hoot and it's available on DVD on my site. For US wavers, you can go to glennmovie.com and click on the amazon.com link (I get a commission if you click to amazon.com from my site!) to purchase and for UK/Europe folks, you can go to glenntilbrook.com and order there.

My doc includes all of the Squeeze songs you know and love-but done acoustically, which I think makes the songs sound less dated and much more fresh. This film took me five years to make and has been a labour of love. I financed the film myself (my credit cards are screaming for mercy) and had to complete the film with the help of New Wavers volunteering their time and services. Reviews from well known mags like Mojo and Uncut and the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune are on my PRESS page if you'd like to have a look to see what others are saying about the flick. Squeeze are one of my favorite New Wave bands and I feel that they have been criminally underrated and historically overlooked.

Thanks for taking time out to read this and sorry to bother you with some shameless self promotion...but I'm a fan like you guys and don't have a big PR company to help get the word out here in the US! So please let any Squeeze fans know of my film. Much appreciated. Feel free to drop me a line to let me know your thoughts on the film!
wif luv,
amy x

"One For the Road" is incredible! Great job, Amy.

I was afraid Glenn roving the US in a finicky RV would be the New Wave answer to "Spinal Tap," but Glenn's brilliance and passion for his craft shines through, with many interesting performances along the way.

My favorite bit was when, in a RV campground in Texas, Glenn greets his neighbors, and slowly they figure out who he is. One of the guys runs back to his RV, and sure enough, he has his copy of "Singles, 45's & Under" along for the weekend. That was priceless!

At first glance I did actually think this was nothing but spam. However after reading the post I must congratulate Amy on the completion of a huge labor of love.

PLEASE don't let this be your only post!!!

Thanks for the kind words.

There ARE some Spinal Tap moments in the film but I think what makes you root for Glenn instead of feel sorry or embarrassed for him, is the way that he handles it. He is very comfortable with his place in the music industry since he has complete creative control for the first time in his career. And he has a great sense of humor, so his attitude in the movie is not fabricated. He's just happy to be playing music.

Personally, I think you're a success if you're doing what you love to do. And you can't ask for more than that really.

Squeeze is one of the great New Wave bands -- always loved them, always will. Great job on the film Amy.

I have the greatest hits cd Singles 45's And Under and have played it to death. I've got the song Take Me, I'm Yours on my ipod shuffle and run to it -- since I live in Phoenix, I love the lyric at the beginning, "I've come across the desert To greet you with a smile "

Were you at Glenn's solo gig at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix? It's featured briefly in my film.

Most of the 45's and Under songs are in my film in some form or another, but my favorite bit in the flick is Glenn doing an acoustic version of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". UNBELIEVABLE.

Glenn is doing a few dates on the East Coast in September, and you gotta check him out. His website is glenntilbrook.com and you can hear some of his solo stuff on www.myspace.com/glenntilbrook. My personal fave is "Untouchable"-a song that can proudly stand beside any Squeeze stuff!!
feeling the love and spreading it accordingly,
amy x

I just watched the movie and I can't recommend it enough. If you like Squeeze, Glenn or music in general it's a wonderful look at an artist trying to find ways to connect with his audience. I loved his optimism and the thrill he gets from the simple pleasure of driving an rv across the states. Having been across the country a few times myself I can relate.

I was expecting something akin to Spinal Tap but his sense of humor never allows that to happen even though there is plenty of opportunity. My favorite is when Glenn is appearing on the San Diego morning news and is scheduled just ahead of Pet of the Week. I think he gets a bigger kick out of it than anyone.

I always liked his music but now have a deeper respect for what he's doing.

Glenn is such a down to earth guy, his impromtu sidewalk busking in front of stunned fans is a treasure and so rare among pop stars. I haven't bought a squeeze album since "Sweets From A Stranger" came out in 1982 and now I'm a full-blown born again Glenn fan I'm gonna go out and buy everything. Can't wait to see him live. Amazing!

I couldn't agree more and hope that people from this site will at least rent the disk. Glenn's living a great life playing the music many of us love.
