What To Do With All These CASSETTES?

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

Cassettes are so retro.. I would keep them. They are as 80ish as Duran Duran, fishnets and molly ringwald. [;)][:D]

Most of mine went the way of the garage sale then the trash, a lot of them i had played so much the printing was worn off the cassette. I did hold onto a few of my favs though for nostalgic purposes.

My cassette collection is small compared to LPs and CDs. (I don't do 8-tracks or reel-to-reel.) There are a couple dozen artists or so where I wanted to just have a complete collection of everything, and when that involved cassettes, then I got the cassettes. When it comes to sound quality and packaging, they certainly are worthless. (The mixtapes were beyond worthless. I taped over all of those.)

Of course, there were plenty of indie and unsigned artists who had albums that were only released on cassette. I don't know what they are offhand, but I remember the ROIR label.

All mine are in a box in the garage. I can't bear to throw them away.

I would just recommend not using the garage, with temp extremes, humidity, etc.....they will likely deteriorate in those extremes. I would keep them in a more controlled environment. I'd also consider at least transferring any rarities to CD-R as an additionla means of backup.

Something very nostalgic about my tapes and my LP's, don't think I'll ever part with them, CD or no CD. I love the smell of all my vinyl, the jackets, etc....

I lost a lot of great songs--artists and songs now unknown and forgotten--when our daughter spilled soda in a plastic bag that I had in my car full of taped from the radio cassettes.[V] Of course she didnt tell me she spilled anything--I found out a day later when I put my hand in the bag.[:(!]

So many rare tunes exist only on casettes.

Id the rarities on that CFNY site...and send them to me. I'd be more than happy to take them off your hands!

And I'll give them a good home too.

I'm a hoarder so I wouldn't even think about the tapes! The problem I find with cassettes though is that they often degenerate in quality over time so I'd advice people to play them and ditch the ones that have degenerated and keep the decent ones.

Maannnn, I got the same problem ---Ive got a massive box FULL of self recorded mixes with labouriously created covers....some tracks of which I will probably never find an mp3 of...I can't part with them.

In addition I have alot of 'store bought' imported casettes with whole sides of rarities which never appeared on vinyl (as the casette was 'cool and new) at the time ie: Thompson Twins 'Quick Step and Side Kick', Japan 'Assemblege' and Matt Bianco 'Whose Side are you on' all have rarities and mixes I've never anywhere else...

also I have hundreds of cassettes which I recorded my own music on a four track ---- which I still want to sort out...

I could never give away all my cassettes. I must have atleast 5,000 of them. Many of them I've made into mp3's, but just the hits only. It would take me years to put them all on mp3 lol

<br>Oh marv, I feel your pain!

I too have wondered what to do w/ all my cassettes. My husband came up with an idea that I should all the covers and put them into a photo album. That way, I can still hang on to the nostalgia aspect, without taking up a lot of space. And besides, much as I love those tapes, they play horribly now. Age has not been kind to them. Many of them have dropped out, with all kinds of strange fadeouts and volume distortions. Not to mention they squeak terribly. So playing them is no longer an option. They're that bad ! And I took care of them, too! I did not expose them to heat/ cold/ dust.

I haven't begun putting together the photo album yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I love all those cover artworks, liner notes, and song lyrics. (I did not have albums).

I like that: putting the covers in a photo album. I'm stealing that idea.

While unpacking, I found that I have over 6 huge boxes full of cassettes, and I'm wondering how to get them on the computer.
