Colin Newman?

Postby zalasta » Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:50 pm

A friend of mine told me that Colin Newman of Wire released an amazing solo album called "A-Z" - is anyone familiar with this album? Thoughts?

Thank ya! [:)]

Yes this is one of his better solo releases (1980). Robert Gotobed from wire helped him on this one. "Alone" which was featured on this mortal coils Filigree & Shadow is in its original form on this release. His more recent release "bastard" is well worth getting. Colin is one of the few "melodic" electro musicians that features form as well as subsatnce. Check out the infamous "Githead" thread to find out more about his releases with his wife Malka Spigel from Minimal Compact. His and her group "Githead".
http://www.githead.com/ profile is the name of their last release. Between releases under his own name and wire Colin is quite prolific and has several other group names hes released under (I.E-Immersion, Oracle etc...)

"Commercial Suicide" and "It Seems" are also great records. Minimal Compact was the backing band on these. If I had to compare them to Wire I guess I would say that they are close in spirit to "A Bell is a Cup Until It's Struck"....all melodic and moody.

I'm going to have to hunt down some Minimal Compact.

"A-Z" was supposed to be the next Wire release if I remember correctly but somehow it became Colin's solo. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm. I haven't heard of this one. I have a CD entitled Swim Team #1, which seems to be a Newman project. The date says 2000. It's got 3 songs by him, 3 by his wife Malka Spigel, and several others. I actually haven't listened to it for quite a while, so I'll give it a spin. Basic minimalist ambient synth. Love it.

Thanks oneno for that info on Swim Team #2...I had no idea. I picked up #1 by random choice in a used CD shop a few years ago, having no idea who Colin Newman was. I was able to give it a sample spin on the shop's headphones and I instantly loved it ! So, I'll keep my eyes & ears open for # 2. Thx again.[:)]

Thanks all for the input!! I'm definitely going to see if I can track down a copy of "A-Z" on CD as my starting point w/ Colin's solo stuff.... then go from there. Sounds really cool.

Remember...."A-Z" is quite different from "Commercial Suicide"....Have an open mind when listening to.

Mostly all the Minimal Compact discography was reissued, with bonus material - all well worth getting.

would it be possible to repost those briefly? I somehow missed them when you posted them originally.

Thanks!
