Billy Idol

Postby randy » Thu Aug 17, 2006 5:10 am

Hearing him on the radio this morning reminded me of this. His solo career consisted of ONE song that I liked--White Wedding. I bought th lp when it came out and was unimpressed--not as good as Gen X stuff. But I remember the song Congo Man which for some reason dissappeared off the lp after it first came out and the lp cover changed. Seems I remember the original cover with Billy in a Hawaiian looking shirt-not leather. Whats up with that?

Yeah, one of my friends has the original release of that LP. Maybe one day, the original cover + Congo Man will reappear again, if they ever do a remastered release.

Congo Man got ditched for Dancing With Myself. I guess they also wanted a tougher image for Billy, so the hawaiian shirt had to go as well. Didn't have the JP Rising Sun all over it?

I always wondered about that. My copy of Dancing with Myself is by GenX, but I've heard the identical song, not a re-recorded version, credited to Idol. Guess that clears it up, thanks.

I actually didn't realise how many idol songs I liked until the mid to late 90's, when I bought a copy of his best-of CD.

I am not sure if I have ever heard the gen-x version of DWM. Is it vastly different?

TM
More snarling if you can believe it... I know it's hard to believe he could snarl more, but he was younger then and more...um, carefree. [:D][;)]

TM
Ooooo, I love it whan you foreigners say things like that... it's the accent. Say this one for me... "Bloody Hell" -- that's more of a British expression though. How about "throw another shrimp on the barbie" [:D][;)]

As far as I can tell the Billy Idol solo version of DWM used the same backing track of bass and drums, possibly rhythm guitar. A new solo was added and the vocal recut, but it's essentially the same song.

Want a good definition of the difference between "punk" and "new wave" in America?

Dancing With Myself by Gen X was a punk song
Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol was a New Wave song.

Its funny how fickle we are.

Idol and Gen X were my crossover from the classic rock my dad raised me on in the mid-to-late '70's (Deep Purple, Jimi, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Foreigner, Neil Young etc.) to punk.

He was an oldschool rocker, so he had no use for my tunes when I started branching out and listening to X, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, etc. but it all started with Idol and a scratchy tape one of my buddy's older brothers was playing one day I happened to be over at the house.

I'd had the original version of "Dancing with Myself" on Gen X's "Kiss Me Deadly" lp for what felt like a couple years before Idol came out with his version.

Always made me like him a little less, the way he acted like it was all just him now when he had the hit with it. It IS the same version that Gen X put out, for God's sake.

Hahaha. "Bloody Hell" is used pretty widely down these parts as well. As too is "Bugger".. I could be wrong.. but I think Crikey actually originated from the UK. It just sounds more ferral when Aussies say it (i.e The Crocodile Hunter).

Did you know that "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" is not a term used at all in Australia.. We call Shrimp "prawns".. they changed it in Paul Hogan's advertisement so Americans would know what he was talking about.

I have the GENERATION X BBC cd and the live version of "DANCING WITH MYSELF" on the cd rocks!![;)] It was recorded live by GENERATION X at the PARIS THEATRE wayback 7/1/81. "DANCING WITH MYSELF" here in MANILA is a new wave staple and everyone just dance over the song once it was played on soirees and parties especially during the 80s[;)]. Well, remember BILLY IDOL's appearance on the film "WEDDING SINGER"?[;)]
