Anybody else like Toyah?(or remember them/her)

Postby newwavepunkgirl » Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:01 am

I just bought a singles compilation by Toyah (still have 'Anthem on lP LOL) I don't know how popular they were in the states but i used to love Toyah when I was little, I even did a concert for my neighbours one Sunday teatime. I loved her hair and the music. (Actually I wanted weird hair then but you couldn't buy it and I was only 9 or something!I did have a make-up/facepaint set to do the make-up whough LOL) Anyhow anybody else like them? (Not sure if they were newwave maybe more punk to start but they had keyboards so...)

I have a massive poster of the very beautiful Toyah in my studio (from Smash Hits 1982)

Toyah was not a band, her name was Toyah Wilcox and I love all of her stuff. Some of my favorite songs include Warrior Rock, Angels And Demons, Sphinx, Vision, Good Morning Universe, Danced, It's A Mystery, Brave New World, I Want To Be Free, Thunder In The Mountains, Neon Womb, Race Through Space, Walkie-Talkie among others. I really like her cover of "Echo Beach" also, She was in a movie called Jubilee which many compare to a low budget (defective) Rocky Horror Picture Show

Toyah was officially a 'band' in the early 80's, as Toyah herself professes. She was not officially a solo artist until 1985's "Minx" album. I'm a huge fan, and start work this week on remastering her 1980 live album "Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!", which will be re-released in October. No vinyl remastering will be involved.

PS: The last name is spelled "Willcox".

Yep that's what I thought because my older brother got me into them/her in the late 70s/early 80s. I'm glad you like Toyah too, I'm enjoying listening to all this stuff again! I want to get the other CD to this compilation next as that has all the real early stuff on which I know better. Good luck with the remastering, hope it goes well![:)]

Toya's carrere, was somehow influenced from husband's Robert Fripp distinguishing music sense and -why not?-from his respectful name in show biz,but Toyah was an excellent performer.Excellent also Fripp's new wave band League of Gentlemen, with Sara Lee from Gang of Four.

I was totally into Toyah. I recall seeing the Anthem lp cover & thought "I have to have this album!!!" I soon bought everything I could that had been released up to that point. I love Anthem, although I think the Changeling is my favorite. Honestly though, every album has something awesome on it. Man, I still sound like such a fanboy! [:I] I'll look for the remastered Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! The live Bird in Flight & Tribal Look were superior to the originals in my opinion.

She was not at all popular where I lived in the states, but then again, nothing remotely alternative was. I used to dig through the import store trying to find anything by her. I eventually had to mail order most of it. I still have all the albums & won't be getting rid of them. I did buy the cd reissues when Caroline released them in the early 90's.

I forgot how beautiful she is until I started checking out some youtube videos.

I'm not really sure how well known she is here. I just made Manekineko a cd of some of her best stuff.

I have her Best Of & her 1985 album, it's all quite good. She's also a Dr Who fan & appeared in a documentary about that show, which is a bonus for me. She always looked like somnething out of Dr Who :p

That's cool and very informative. What's ironic about what you said is now it's hard to get Toyah and that old stuff here in the uk, LOL. I totaally understand how it wasn't so big int he states because for some reason as far as mainstream success goes I think punk and it's offshoots were more ppular here at the time, I blame The Sex Pistols meself...[;)]

I first saw/heard Toyah in URGH! A Music War. Over the years I've been able to get most of the LPs on vinyl.

If memory serves me correctly she and Fripp put out an album in the early 90's called Sunday All Over The World. An ex-girlfriend had it at the time. I questioned her about it last year and she had no idea what I was talking about. Maybe I just dreamt the whole thing?

Like Ollie, I also first heard Toyah in Urgh! A Music War. But she was unknown for the most part on the US radio and media. My fave stations back then never played her, at least not that I could remember. However, you could find her stuff in record stores if you looked around enough. I just don't recall that she ever got played on the radio. I always thought she had the coolest hair and image.

I like Toyah--though all I have of hers is "It's a Mystery" from Pop and Wave, but I really like it (much to a friend of mine's horror. When I made a tape of vintage new wave songs for him, he loved it all except as he called her the "Siouxsie Wanna Be.") She's certainly an artist who much to my puzzlement, hasn't made a name in the states at all.
