New Wave embarrassment

Postby birdmadgirl » Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:04 pm

I just made an incredibly embarrassing discovery. I thought the lead singer for a band I like quite a bit is a girl--and I was convinced it was a guy. (A kind of feminine-sounding guy, but male, anyway!) In the old videos for this band on youtube, lady even looks sort of like a dude. Well, like a dude who decided to be a girl.

Guess who! Winner gets a BMG-Las Vegas care package.

I got it! Dead or Alive! For the longest time, I was convinced she was a guy myself.

For a long time I wondered about Alison Moyet. Sure, I was "mostly" sure she was a woman (and now I know that she is), but at the time, her deep and amazingly powerful voice, coupled with her large head and prominent features made me doubt myself. Women just didn't sing like that. For years I wondered if she was maybe in drag or a transsexual. [:0]

So true! When I first heard "Love Resurrection" I thought that it was Spandau Ballet.

BMG, I think the band of which you're thinking is Scritti Politti.

I thought "Allison moyet" was a dude too. Sounded just a bit masculine in the vocals. Mind you, the music sucked to me either way.

When I first got Christian Death's "Only Theatre of Pain," I thought Rozz was a really creepy-sounding chick.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! MY EYES!!!!

You know, Michael Jackson achieved the impossible. He went from being a black man to a white woman. Can't say that about anyone else ...

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

I feel like such a dummy. [:I] But even knowing that she's a she, she still sounds awfully masculine to me. (Um, has she always been a she?)

Somehow I don't *think* anyone would name a baby girl "Paul Julian" (i.e. Green's real first and middle names). ;)

Anyway, ooh, Alison Moyet. What about that one female singer who seemed to do a lot of duetting/background singing for the Culture Club as well? Because that one had a very Alf Moyet-like voice and appearance. So much so that I used to totally believe that Alf Moyet WAS in fact that one Culture Club girl. I think I found out several years ago that she was someone else, not the Yaz frontwoman.

Oh boy, oh boy! What do I win? A slightly used lipstick? (Oh, come on, you can spare one of your 91 tubes! [;)][:D])

Or how about an all expenses paid trip to sin city? You and I can cruise all the Elvis impersonator shows, fill up on cheap shrimp cocktails, and audition for the chorus line of a show. I've always wanted to wear a gaudy headdress and fishnets.

I thought "Goodbye Horses" was sung by a guy.

I also thought "Holding Back the Years" (Simply Red) was sung by a black female.

I dinstinctly remember a rumor circulating in the early '80s that Alison Moyet was in fact a post-operative male-to-female transsexual (which I believed for many years), so you're definitely not alone.
