Sorry, I didn't edit the list of bands, but maybe I should, do U like Britney?
No, throw on another Colour Field track, we need give a few more 2nd rate acts some exposure.

A new wave outpost album MUST include obscurities, material that is hard to find, at the moment out of print, or tracks still existing only on vi nyl. It can still include artists we know, certainly include extended versions one hasn't heard since the third digit of a year had an "8" in it (maybe a 7) . . .

<br>I think the box Set should include 4 CD's

CD#1: Gentle New Wave
The Wild Swans, The Railway Children, Care, The Colourfield, The Lotus Eaters, The Pale Fountains, The Room, The Smiths, The Cure, Soft Cell, Modern English, The Adventures, Aztec Camera, The Beloved, The Bible, The Big Dish, The Chameleons UK, China Crisis, The Church, Close Lobsters, EBTG, 10,000 Maniacs, The Sundays, Figures on a Beach, Fra Lippo Lippi, Frazier Chorus, Guadalcanal Diary, House of Love, The Housemartins, The Lightning Seeds, The River Detectives, Riverside, 16 Tambourines, The Weather Prophets, Icicle Works, Book of Love, The Replacements etc, etc I guess we need a DVD[:D]

CD#2: Power New Wave

The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission UK, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Waterboys, Cactus World News, The Mighty Lemon Drops, Clan of Xymox, X'Mal Deutschland, Gene Loves Jezebel, Wire Train, Bauhaus, The Bolshoi, Tones on Tail, The Cult, The Sound, Romeo Void, Red Rockers, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Theatre of Hate, Propaganda, The March Violets, Love & Rockets, Lords of the New Church, Killing Joke, Gang of Four, Specimen, EATB, The Alarm, Big Audio Dynamite, The Call, The Godfathers, TPOH? and I think Joy Division should be placed here also, where else? etc, etc Another DVD.[:D]I was thinking to include The Clash but after all it's a new wave compilation ....

CD#3 Mainstream New Wave (or bands which have commercial appeal).

Depeche Mode, New Order, A Flock of Seagulls, Camouflage, B52s, Ice House, The Psychedelic Furs, A House, Fiction Factory, Pet Shop Boys? OK I go for Suburbia for the sake of the group being represented, OMD? Unfortunately we can't bypass that one, Erasure? Ouch! I guess A Little Respect will do, Alphaville, B-Movie, Berlin, Big Country, Classix Nouveaux? Not sure if it would fit here, Cocteau Twins, Duran Duran? I wonder if U could forget them, probably not, Flesh For Lulu, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Stone Roses, The Go-Betweens, Billy Idol, Information Society, James, Lloyd Cole, Men Without Hats, Midnight Oil, Gary Numan? Not Cars again and again!, The Ocean Blue, Pseudo Echo, Real Life, Red Flag, Simple Minds, Sparks, The Stranglers, The Style Council, Ultravox, The Thompson Twins , Talk Talk, When In Rome, Tears For Fears, Yaz etc,etc I guess we could easily forget bands like Human League, A-ha, ABC and similar bands...[:D]

CD#4 Obscure Bands

I guess Mike could provide that one but I would like to see Fay Ray, Flaming Mussolinis, Gangway, Malaria, Balaam and the Angel, Howard Devoto, Ms Kimberly, Dragon, Dole, Voice of America, Red Box, H2O, 1000 Violins, The Passmore Sisters, FZ13, Under Two Flags, Psi Com, Q Lazzarus, Krew etc, etc

So the question is when will we see the Mother of all NW compilations? [:D]

CD 1 is how a New Wave station should be programmed instead of, you know, (gag) the Producers, Cyndi Lauper, the Bangles...
CD 1 is how a New Wave station should be programmed instead of, you know, (gag) the Producers, Cyndi Lauper, the Bangles...
"New Wave" doesn't seem an appropriate label for a station that plays those bands, by the mid to late 80's, it was usually referred to as "Modern Rock" or "College Rock". The term "New Wave" served it's purpose nicely through out the early 80's. A station now willing to cover the whole decade most likely would call itself something like 80's Alternative. BTW - I like most the bands listed on disc 1, I have their CD's, been to their concerts. Back then we didn't call them New Wave, especially bands like The Sundays, The Replacements, Frazier Chorus, Guadalcanal Diary, House of Love, and The Housemartins that weren't around when new wave was happening.

Again, it has to do with individual views on when or if New Wave ended. Given that New Wave is supposed to be a progressive music, I see nothing wrong with artists such as the House of Love, for example, being a reflection of evolution in a progressive genre. Elvis Costello in 1977, for example, is considered New Wave yet he sounds nothing like Total Coelo in 1982, who are also labeled New Wave. So there is a dramatic evolution in sound there, and I can't see why New Wave perished instead of merely continuing to progress.

The term New Wave also lost its usage because record companies like to repackage musical styles with new names for the sake of marketing freshness. It's like how today's New Wave groups are called "dancepunk" to make it seem new and shiny to the kids. If Echo & the Bunnymen are New Wave, stylistically how different are they than the House of Love, who are now Alternative but not New Wave? It doesn't make any sense.

I must agree with MIKE SUTTON's view regarding the years of bands existence to be called NEW WAVE or MODERN ROCK.[8D] It depends on the individual's and country's perspective. Here in MANILA, MODERN ROCK was the term used by NU107 back in 1988-1990 on their NEW WAVE FORMAT but it's still considered as NEW WAVE. NEW WAVE has a lot of SUBGENRE and I think MODERN ROCK theme of the 80s is still NEW WAVE[;)] Record companies just stop using it.[8D] The artists that you suggested for the CD compilation falls on all SUBGENRE of NEW WAVE. PEACE!![;)]
