The record industry has coined the term Power Pop,
[/quote] Are you sure? Care to site a source?

From my understanding Seymour Stein of Sire Records coined the phrase "New Wave". Sire was a very cool label, with a bunch of great bands, so I don't think it's such a bad thing.

So what? Sire Records might be a cool label but it belongs to the record industry, don't U think so?. You know, very often the marketing boys steal other people ideas if it fits their plans..The term Power Pop might have appeared long time ago to qualify bands relatively obscure but it has been revitalized recently to cover a large chunk of musicians. What I'm only saying is that we should do our share here to preserve the term new wave even in a limited way. The appellation new wave has already disappeared from record bars but I make it a point in Tower to ask for the latest new wave releases. Most of the time I draw a blank stare from the attendants but I don't care, at least I keep the term alive in my own way. Sometimes I bump against a more knowledgeable attendant and we are happy to discuss about the bands we like.

I'm all for perserving the term New Wave, but we need to deal in facts and have some common language and descriptions of genres, regardless of what the record companies use. I see no value in using terms like "gentle wave" to describe a sub-genre of New Wave, it only causes confusion. Hell your welcome to try promting the term around here, but I'd say your off to a rough start, especially if you choose to put down one of the more popular genres around here.

BTW - In your world when a "gentle wave" band becomes popular and has chart success do they then automatically end up "mainstream wave"? Or does mainstream describe a sound?

For fuck's sake Patrick. Does he have to explain everything to you? [:D]

When a "gentle wave" band achieves any measure of commercial success, they would then be immediately re-classified into the sub-category of "gentle stream wave" so as to differentiate them from "gentle wave" bands who have yet to experience any commercial success; thus ensuring that we are still able to make the all important distinction between them and "mainstream wave" bands which were always "mainstream wave".

I must say this is much simplier then the system those damn record companies devised.

I never thought the term "Power Pop" was an especially complimentary one. If I was in a band an someone labeled it Power Pop I think I'd have reservations. However, it is an accurate definition and one that I do like but I have yet to see it being used as a buzzword to sell records, probably for the reasons cited above.

As for artists I don't like, the ones I probably dislike most are ones I initially liked. Then when the thin veneer of novelty wore off, I realized they had little substance. I'm a sucker for that pop sound until my 20/20 hindsight kicks in. Gene Loves Jezebel is a good example. Used to love 'em, now I can't really listen to 'em except for a couple of songs when I'm in the right mood.

Of course I'm guitly of hyping the band initially, then have to put my tail between my legs when it turns out they're not the next big thing. I hate when I get seduced like that!

Some people think it's cool not to like things that are mainstream (U2, Springsteen, etc.). Like if they admit they like it, it's a poor reflection on their artsy fartsy self image. Not everyone but some. And if nobody admits to this, somebody's lying!

Let me state first that I would like to see this forum acting as a Senate depositary of the new wave heritage and pennant. The fact that we have no authority to do that is irrelevant here, let's say that it's a coup d'etat![:D] Secondly, I'm not using the term mainstream in a derogatory sense, actually I usually specify bands with a mainstream appeal. If U wish for the sake of the discussion to help me find a better term, you are welcome since I'm not fully satisfied with the appellation, however it's very difficult to find a single niche for groups as disparate as A Flock of Seagulls and B-52's...Now as far as the classification is concerned it is more a matter of sound rather commercial success. From time to time there will be a few problems with bands that have altered their sounds but the challenge is not insurmountable.[:)]

Hi all,

1--when the media pumps a no-talent artist to in-your-face nauseum (need I say who).
2--when the artist is so without dignity that you wonder if they should've gone to Bob Guccioni or Hugh for a job instead.
3--Michael Jackson is so funged up that "it" doesn't own up and reveal to the public it's a freak. Thus, the media pumps this thing like crazy. Frankly, I don't think it's human but, the media hypes "it" up as if "it" is a music artist.

If the term "Power Pop" doesn't make sense, then certainly "power new wave" doesn't make sense either. Your logic is flawed.

If "Power pop" is a term created by record companies to sell records & is simply a marketing tool...then "new wave" is too.

Jeez - let it go.
