David Bowie NW or not?

Postby newwavepunkgirl » Thu Sep 21, 2006 9:56 pm

I'm listening to a David Bowie best-of and it occures to me that he was newwave before newwave! Ziggy Stardust had a red mullet a decade before it was fashion and his music obviously inspired new wave bands like Duran Duran (ok so Nick Rhodes took it to mean look like Bowie LOL and Toyah Wilcox was a female Bowie) and of course Bowie had a lot of hits in the 70s/80s so would you call him newwave or just say he inspired?I think Bowie was way ahead of his time with both music and image. (Even Marilyn Manson has copied him) Would be interested to know![:D]

I would have to say that Bowie was one of the most influential men in rock, and that includes new wave. Ziggy Stardust was new wave before anyone knew what it was.

Big influence, but like Kraftwerk, he was bigger than one genre to take exclusive claim to. My vote is for "not".

Bowie was the unofficial Godfather of New Wave in my book. Countless NW singers were trying so hard to be him.

I'm sure when New Wave hit big in the early 80's, just about the time Bowie's career was itself peaking, Bowie grinned a wry smile at all these kids and thought, "Nice try fellas, been there, done that."

<p align="justify">Not New Wave, even when he was making music at the height of New Wave (Scary Monsters, Let's Dance, etc), Bowie was not New Wave. Nick Rhodes lifted his look from David Sylvian (of Japan), actually. David Sylvian was inspired by Bowie and Roxy Music.

Dang, Mr. Bowie is a hard one to categorize.

I think he was NW without meaning to be NW. He was experimental and his results ended up being the springboard for later, younger artists to take the look and sound farther.

His early music is a little too out there for me. I never have been able to get into David Bowie very much. His mainstream stuff is kind of okay but I just don't love his music.

But looking at him over the years, that's a whole different story. He is visually fascinating. At times he looks scary and freakish. Other times he looks downright sexy and handsome.

Such an enigma.

I don't know if you'd categorize a forerunner as being a part of the genre they influenced. I guess I'd say not new wave per se, but absolutely laid the foundation for it along with a couple others.

Actually, Bowie is an avant-garde artist that has experimented a lot but I don't consider him New Wave.
However, many artists in the genre are highly influenced by him... not only NewRo bands but also artists like Morrissey,The Cure and Depeche Mode.

XXX, nice pic of David Sylvian you've posted! [:D] Hehe... gonna copy it for personal uses (contemplation,of course).

Obviously inspired many NW artists. That in itself makes him not new wave.

He's not Neew Wave, just ahead of the curve in music, the forerunner of punk, new wave, new romantic, etc.

I also enjoy his early "mod" bands: The Manish Boys and Davy Jones And The Lower Third!
