... or rather, literarily. I was wondering how many NW songs either interpret or allude to works of literature or poetry. Two that come to mind are 'Dream Within A Dream' by Propaganda and 'All In The Golden Afternoon' by Alphaville. Both provide an awesome musical score and accompanying vocals to classic written works. The first by Edgar Allan Poe and the latter, a poem which serves as a preface to Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland'.

I'll regurg an obvious one... "that book by Nabokov" referring to Lolita by Vlidimir Nabokov in "Don't Stand So Close to Me".

It's once removed, but Limahl's "Neverending Story" counts, right?

Burning Sensations - "Belly of the Whale" (The Hebrew Bible. I think. I don't know; it wasn't on my list of required reading.)

Big Audio Dynamite's "The Bottom Line" has a pair of Shakespeare references:

"...perchance to dream..." (from Hamlet)
"Romeo oh Romeo you gotta have your say"

Elvis Costello's "Man Out of Time" has references to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five

Joy Division's "Interzone" is the original title of William S. Burrough's "Naked Lunch"

Morrissey has tons of references to Shakespeare
